The story of this season has been our play away from the dome.

I figured, if there's anything to learn from player performances, it's only from away games.
The following are overall stats from the away games only (players with 25% of snaps or more included).

I then throw in stats from the entire season (both home and away) to see how they differ.

OFFENSE

OL
Grubbs: +9.2
Evans: +5.9
Strief: +2.6
DLP: +2.3
Brown: -3.7

RB
Thomas: +8.1
Sproles: +6.4

WR
Moore: +2.1
Colston: +1.5
Meachem: +.3
Stills: -1.5

TE
Graham: +2.9
Watson: -2.4

HB
Collins: -.5

QB
Brees: +2.9

Let's compare these scores to the entire season, both home and away games.

DEFENSE

DL
Jordan: +8.1
Hicks: +7
Bunkley: +1
Johnson: -.5
Jenkins: -2.5

LB
Haralson: +3.8
Galette: -1.5
Lofton: -5.1
Hawthorne: -10.6

DB
Vaccaro: +3.2
Lewis: +2.5
White: +.7
Bush: +.6
Greer: -2.5
Jenkins: -2.8

And this is the full season on defense:

On offense, it appears that the following players perform much worse on the road than they do at home:
Brees
Strief
Graham
Colston
Sproles (to a lesser extent)

On defense, it appears that these players play much worse away:
Jordan
Galette
John Jenkins
Lewis
White
and especially Hawthorne

well gawd dang man... I thought Hawthorne was doing better than that.

I've been skeptic of Lofton this year though.

I felt both of them played their worst game of the year against the Jets.

the 2nd quarter of that game was rough. First of all, Ivory ripped off a long run that got them out of the shadow of their own goal post. Then the TD after the Nick Toon tip drill that led to an interception.

A post!

But our ILB's seem to be a problem.
PFF reveals that most of their negative variance comes from coverage.

I'm starting to think those two are the reason the middle of the field tends to be easy catches for opposing teams.

I guess I missed the plays where Hawthorne was sucking against the Rams.

but he did make a ton of tackles in that one.

saw Lofton whiff on a few.

I still feel like we could use more speed at that position.

that was something I thought Alec Ogletree could help out with if we had gone in that direction.

but it turns out he hasn't been doing so well in coverage either. It would be easy to point to his long interception return for a TD vs. Houston but what else do we go by?

I remember hearing Tim Ryan (color guy from our game the other day) making a comment about how the Rams back seven have really struggled in coverage but that their front four is so good it usually makes up for it.

kind of a lazy observation... I mean you would think that would be the case for most teams, right?

Well, that was the case when we played them.
In both ways.

They got to Brees so quickly that he couldn't pass effectively.
And our front four/three was so non-existent that we allowed Clemmons to pass all over us.

I feel like if they had done a better job stopping the run in the 1st half, they would have had more chances to pin their ears back and get after Clemens.

The Rams just set the tone early.

another troubling sign is the defense hasn't collected a turnover since Corey White's interception vs. San Fran.

I don't even begin to understand why this defense doesn't create turnovers.

This defense is like the opposite of the 2009 defense.
More sound, but much less opportunistic.

wait.. I take that back.

Corey White recovered a fumble when ATL was driving late in the game up in the Georgia Dome.

I think Dawson forced the fumble from one of their WR's.

White also had his hands on a pick in the Seattle game.. but... the curse of the NO CATCHING MF returned.
