With a piece of shite O Line. What gives? And why do these QBs these days hold franchises at gun point when it does nothing but hurt themselves? One day someone will smarten up, I think. Give up a few of that 130 million dollar contract and get yourself some good protection.

1. No agent is going to let their client take less money.

2. Most players, atleast early in their careers, would rather be paid more and be a .500 team than be paid less to win more games.

Unless a player is a Jordan-level superstar who has big endorsement deals, he wants the bucks

Say a QB took less money, would he have any say on who the brass went after?

Not really. In the end it's all about taking care of your family over winning a couple more games. I'm sure Drew Brees, Peyton manning, Aaron Rodgers and so on are all really good people, but their still not taking less money like you think they should be. I wonder why....

Smarten up?

Completely disagree. Would you be willing to give up half of your salary for a team member who isn't as good as you so that it could make a little more and would help the company?

Last year I took less money so we could beef up our accounting department.

Tom Brady took less money.

quote:

Tom Brady signed a three-year contract extension for $27 million yesterday in a deal that will keep him in New England until 2017, Sports Illustrated's Peter King reports.
The going rate for a top-tier QB these days is $20 million a year. Drew Brees and Peyton Manning make that, and Joe Flacco is asking for it in free agency.

quote:

So Brady didn't just give the Pats a hometown discount, he signed a deal for less than half of what he's worth on the open market.

The reasons are simple: He wants to win and he wants job security.

quote:

By taking less money, Brady will have better players around him.

What is considered to be an "old" QB? Mid-30s? Earlier than that? These QBs, and all football players for that matter, retire a couple of decades than any other profession. Got to get as much money as you can while you can, and if someone is willing to pay you that money, then take it.

They need money to afford their hot wives.

See other thread.

Not when you consider the extension doesn't kick in until 2015.

So Brady didn't just give the Pats a hometown discount,
He actually didn't take much of a discount at all, it's all about the guaranteed portion.

The reason IS simple, and it's because he didn't actually take less money.

His contract goes thru 2017 when he will be 40. I wonder if he will walk away the $15M he's due that year if he is not playing as well for the good of the team?

Flacco signs huge contract, can't afford Boldin, now has weak WRs and Rice has no running room. Look at Brees' OL. Steelers can't re-sign key defenders.

When will these QBs learn they can't win by themselves and w/out solid line play they will be physically beaten and suffer in their old age?

I think the problem lies in lineman not being relatively appreciated compared to QBs

QBs are protected as much as they can be.

When you hear these stories of former players, it's almost never QBs. There's Jim McMahon off the top of my head really struggling, but he was also a wreckless player.

Also, just the notion of suffering is the reason why you get all the money you can now.

And again like I said, would you be willing to take a 50% or so discount so someone else in your department who isn't as good as you can make more money? I mean, it would be for the good of the company, right?

We all want and expect athletes to do things we ourselves wouldn't do.

I'm interested to see what the Seahawks do with Russell Wilson. If they give him a big contract, their run is probably going to end.

Sounds silly, but you have to. It is the best chance to win.

History suggests after guys get the big deal, it becomes tougher for teams to win, but I'd still argue they have the best chance of winning because the alternative is Brees, Wilson, or Rodgers leaving and you're stuck with a QB from free agency or through the draft which can set you back years.
