Ali dodging 21 punches in 10 seconds...

quote:

This was taken from an exhibition match Ali fought against Michael Dokes in 1977. Dokes isn't exactly George Foreman, but this is still damn impressive. Ali was 35 years old when this happened! Dokes was 19! This is why Ali is the GOAT.

I mean, I know it actually happened, but this had to be staged right since it was an "exhibition" match?

Doesn't look staged

But do not make the mistake of thinking Ali knew exactly where to move on each of those punches either.

He was using incredible head movement to be sure, but he is also lucky he didn't run flat into something with his hands on the ropes like that too. He did catch an uppercut but while he was moving away so it wasn't much of anything

Ps, the fact that it is an exhibition night account for the guy not trying to crush Ali's liver in that clip. He might have been playing along for the showmanship, but it certainly looks like he was trying to hit him hard. I would imagine in a real bout there, the guy would go hard to the body midway through that after missing a few just to shake up the movement

Ali went with the classic dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge.

Looks staged to me. Dokes isn't extending on most of those punches.

I love watching Doakes' hands... you see his punches flying everywhere with good speed and technique... but he keeps coming up with air.

In some, yes. But in roughly punches 4-10, he doesn't extend fully.

I asked if it was legit too, in the sense that was Ali that good/cocky during regular matches? Not old enough to watch him live.

He doesn't extend because he is crowding himself when he stepped too deep on his first few punches

Doesn't mean he isn't swinging hard. Fighters rarely extend on the inside because there is no room and no need to do so.

Yeah, that's where my ignorance in boxing comes in. The gif is really damn impressive, but I find it hard to believe he did that with his hands on the ropes, know what I mean?

Go watch a bit of Emmanuel Augustus

He does ridiculous stuff like that constantly. He was once DQd for showboating too much in a televised championship bout

In the fight, he spent one round staring at Courtney Burtons wife the entire round while slipping Burton's punches and countering him. He really made him look foolish in that round all the while his eyes and head never left Burton's wife who was seated in the front row

Eh.

I think it's some showmanship by both of them, because he would have gone hard midsection on him if it was legit.

Joe Frazier actually did this same thing to ALI in the first fight. Except he wasn't pinned in the corner. But both hands down, head out, and constant movement while taunting made ALI missed in combinations of 4 and 5 punches at a time then would drop that left hook on him hard

The strangest thing is nobody in the crowd is cheering or standing up. If I was sitting ringside and saw that happening I would be going nuts, as would most normal humans.

The first half of that clip is real, but the second part is just a close up rerun of the first part.

I think the likelihood that is staged and he didn't connect once would be more improbable that it wasn't staged and Ali wasn't just a boss.

No it isn't. You can see during the "first part", Dokes is punching straight with his right hand.

During the "close-up second part", he is punching downwards with his right hand.

Just from that, you can easily see it isn't the same.

Allegedly, Wally Pep won a round on all 3 scorecards without landing a single punch.

It isn't far-fetched, by comparison, to simply dodge a lot of punches.
