Can you imagine the guilt this man will have to live with the rest of his life?

Hammond man fatally shot while on hunting trip

Updated: Dec 07, 2013 1:51 PM CST

HAMMOND, La. - Police are investigating the death of a man who was shot on a hunting trip.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's office responded to the call of a fatal shooting around 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

Joseph H. Stevens Jr., 33, was killed in what is believed to be an accidental shooting while on a hunting trip with Stacey M. Trapp, 37.

According to Trapp, as the two walked back to their cars and came across a net-wire fence. As they walked along the fence searching for an easier way through Trapp squatted down to go under some bushes with his rifle slung over his shoulder when the weapon accidentally fired and fatally shot Stevens. Trapp then called 911 for help.

Investigators do not suspect foul play at this time.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries advises hunters to use basic hunting safety procedures while going to and from hunting locations, including keeping the gun on safe and not having any bullets or shells in the chamber.

No reason why that weapon should have been loaded or even had a magazine inserted.

How people have not learned this yet is beyond me. This is one of the first things you learn when you start hunting as a kid.

I know a guy here who blew his own arm off with a shotgun while traversing a fence. This was over 15 yrs ago.

That is terrible. How hard is it to lay the gun on the ground under the fence and pick it up once you are over?

I don't even bother loading mine until I'm in the stand/blind. The only thing that stays loaded is my sidearm, and I don't always have that with me and when I have to climb over a fence or something I take it out of the holster and place it down facing a safe direction.

You serious? Nothing wrong with having a loaded rifle while you walk to a stand as long as you always keep it pointed in a safe direction. You do that and even if it goes off, everyone is safe

I wonder how the responses in this thread correlate with the drinking and hunting thread?

I can't say i've even crossed a fence with a gun even on my shoulder. I always take it off and rest it against the fence, cross fence, grab gun and then reload.

I drink on occasion while hunting. I also rarely unload my rifle. Haven't had an issue yet.

Some people grew up being taught the exact wrong way to do things, and some people are just flat out dumb. This is why every profession has multiple safety men

FWIW, I never have a loaded chamber doing anything unless I am ready to shoot. Really, how long does it take to cycle bolt or rack a slide?

I've never had a sip of alcohol during a hunt. I think it's very irresponsible. Too much can go wrong. Even if you're rather lucid, it can only make trouble for you if something were to go wrong.
