Since the loss to Bama all I've been reading is this team has packed it in because they have nothing to play for. Scott Rabalais even wrote of this team "playing in a bowl game nobody wants to play in". My thoughts all along were that any competitive person (much less elite athletes) like to win, even if its at checkers. So winning period was always an incentive on my mind.

Then:

1. Mettenberger was quoted two days before the A & M game as saying "We want to win 10 games so that we can keep the streak of 10-win seasons alive."

2. Elliot Porter was quoted as saying in the Saturday edition of the Advocate "We want to beat A & M so that we can play in the best bowl possible."

Did the Tigers play like a team who had nothing to play for Saturday? Thank God our players don't think like many of our fans who think you might has well quit if you aren't challenging for a title or if you aren't playing in a BCS bowl.

having nothing to play for is a myth and only applies to fan bases

Several of them are posting in the "Jeremy Hill should have carried the ball more" thread.

Yep, winning feels good.

Losing sucks.

and there it is.

I propose that whenever a team loses their 3rd game, that they just forfeit the rest of the season so they can get out of the way and we can watch all the teams who still have something to play for.

Who's with me?!

Didnt take long to find this in your post history:

I know things like pride, competitiveness and hating to lose are not motivators enough for college athletes so maybe "being a spoiler" will have to do.

The Mick - you actually took the time to research my post history and this is the best you could come up with. Keep looking for more of my thoughts on why I think player play the game (or at least hope they do). I do wonder why you think you needed to do this research.

Anyway.......the sentence you quoted me on is chock full of sarcasm. Go back and do more research and you will see how many times I have written about there being more to playing the game than winning titles. So, I very much believe that personal pride, group effort, pure competitiveness, hating to lose, wanting to beat your man on every single play and on and on are motivators.

There....no sarcasm in this post.

There you go messing around when we all know that "winning is everything." Winning is the only thing.

(editors note: this was sarcasm)

I'm right here. I'm glad the team has something to play for. And I'm glad we won for recruiting, but as far as this team goes, you are playing for pride. Hard as a fan to get excited about going to a non bcs bowl again. Just the way I feel.

What exactly were they playing for? West Title? Championship? I am glad they won. Maybe helps a little with a better bowl. Miles himself has said you play to win championships. That's his goal every year. Those are his words. Argue with him.

I agree 100%. Before each season everyone on this board wants to win the west and play in Atlanta. Now, what do we play for? We'll see about recruiting but the bowl game will be a substandard one.
