Safe way to keep my pistol by the bed?

I have two kids under 5. I'd like to keep my pistol behind the headboard so my wife and I can each access it as opposed to two guns in two bedside finger or palm print safes.
But I obviously need it to be inaccessible.
And don't tell me my 2 year old should know better. Or even that a 13 year old should know better.

Kids don't know better, so you're right to be cautious.
You can make your own behind the headboard, but you would have to worry about your kids finding it.
They also make fake clocks that hold firearms.
ETA: Poster above me has best suggestion. I retract all previous statements.

Bedside safe box is gonna be the most secure and best for keeping away from kids.
Think someone mentioned a creative idea of building a small shelf inside their bedroom closet just over the doorway. A shotgun can be kept there out of reach of kids and can be quickly accessible.

Gunvault SpeedVault SV500 gun safe
This one uses the 4 buttons as a combination lock which I like better, but they do make the same vault with a biometric lock for about a $100 more

Now it is not a "safe" and could easily be compromised with a crowbar or even a big screwdriver, it's purpose is not to keep the gun away from bad guys(get a good safe for that) this thing is to keep the gun away from the little guys while also making it accessible to you

That's exactly what I was looking for. I can mount that behind the bed. Thanks man.

How about a basic old style gun rack on the wall?
BTW, home security is a lot more than just having a pistol or shotgun in your home.
Look into securing your doors and windows. Buy door reinforcement kits like EZ Armor, they make a door almost impossible to breakdown.
Install some of those electronic 'screechers' on your windows. They are at Wollyworld for about $20 for a pair of them.
Install motion lights around the perimeter of your home.
Get some lights with timers on them. When you are away for an extended period of time, set your lights to be turned on and off at differential intervals. Have a neighbor check your mail everyday and get your newspaper from your drive(I know, who buys newspapers anymore)
Get a couple of yapping dogs. A barking dog will scare most would-be thieves & burglars away.
Thieves and burglars look for easy targets.
Make your home a castle, don't be an easy target.

He posts the same thing every time someone makes a thread on home defense.
ETA: and this thread isn't on home defense.

Anyhoo. Didn't you read my first sentence? You don't read good, err, well.
BTW, too many many people make the mistake of thinking having a weapon or two in their home is all they need.
And yes, I know. I have witnessed accounts home breakins.

I have a dog who is a monster. I can leave the front door unlocked without any fear.

Perhaps it is. Why else would a person want to keep a weapon at home in their bed room?

The OP's primary concern is keeping a gun close by AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, away from his small children.

OK, I see this is turning into a circle jerk with you. This is my last response to you.
I read the OP and I offered up a simple inexpensive solution.
I offered up other ideas as well. If you are too butt hurt about that, then you have other issues.
