Update: One of IGN's office machines suffers from the same disc drive problem many have reported. When a disc is inserted, the Xbox One makes a grinding noise, but the disc is unaffected. However, Xbox One won't read any game discs. "Sorry, we can't play the disc," a notification says. "Try an Xbox One game, a music CD, or a movie on Blu-ray or DVD."

An IGN reader's system is in an endless cycle of crashing and rebooting. Another has issues with his headset outputting nothing but static. Others have seen the "E100" notification, indicating a total hardware failure caused by an update error. The Xbox One troubleshooting page notes that this error requires you submit your Xbox One for repair.

Other new Xbox One owners have reported numerous issues to the Xbox support message board, including concerning issues with disc drives, unusual sounds coming from the machine, more spontaneous system shutdowns, missing pixels, and blank or frozen screens. Others can't get their systems to start in the first place.

As expected. I'm sure most work just fine like the PS4.

This is just to compile a list of possible problems you can face
1.disc drive not reading game/ loud noise coming from drive (This is the most common issue right now, so far 4-5 cases of this, DO NOT PUT YOUR XBOX VERTICALLY, ONLY HORIZONTALLY) LINK
2.Hanging load screen (If you are stuck at the Xbox logo after updating, DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR CONSOLE.) LINK
3. Ban after using EOU UPDATE ( previously had problems with OS hanging) LINK
4. slow installations if you are having slow disc based installation, do NOT remove disc from console without stopping the install. after stopping the install remove the disc and and completely unplug the console and wait 15 minutes before trying again.
Dont bloody try to install 2 THINGS at once
5. controller not responding after turning console on in intial setup TURN THE CONSOLE OFF AND ON- THEN IT is fixed
6. cross game party system is is defaulted as off,You have to "Turn on party chat" before joining here is how to do it: LINK
7.I ran into error code 0x80bd0009* after attempting to set up the X1 to output surround audio. I found an Xbox Support twitter thread that explained how to troubleshoot this error and it worked: Press Menu Button, Settings, Display & Sound, ensure HDTV is "select," not "auto." This relaunched my display in 480p, which I easily changed back to 1080p; but the key is that this reset my audio output options. I could now select HDMI audio for 5.1 and DTS, which I couldn't before. Hopefully this helps others with the same error code

Yeah. I bet that's over 30% of the problem. After day one install the xbox one start up screen hangs forever. People have been restarting thinking it was frozen and it bricks. I knew this and I was still tempted to restart because it took so long.

Yep the only hardware issues seems to be coming from disk drives

although I prefer the PlayStation brand I always end up owning both consoles, so I'm not a PS fanboy. But the PS4 clearly states during the update process DO NOT TURN OFF OR UNPLUG YOUR SYSTEM UNTIL THE UPDATE IS FINISHED AND IT RESTARTS.

Seems like for a day one update that is known to hang and could cause bricking if shut off, that a pretty bold disclaimer should have been on screen or before hand. Maybe there is/was one, I'm not sure.

let the console wars continue!

Meh. shite happens. Even though my PS4 is fine, stuff like that and what the One has gone through so far is expected. I feel bad for the people that have problems, but it shouldn't be unexpected.

I also hate the fact people are experiencing faulty consoles but most early adopters should probably go in knowing this.

I'm an idiot though, this is my first launch day system (been gaming since NES-days) and when I got my PS4 from amazon (with a dent in the outer box) and hooked it all up, and didn't see a red light indicating it had power and couldnt find the hidden power button, i texted my brother saying i had a DOA ps4, he texted me back immediately saying RFTM, and i did, and felt like an idiot when I saw where the power "button" is.

Fired right up with no problems. I'm so glad bc most of the faulty PS4's were from amazon.

The packaging for my XB1 from amazon was less than impressive.
