Here is ESPN teams with most finishes in top 5 recruiting classes for the past 4 years:
1- Alabama 4, every year
2- Fla 3
3- Texas 3
4- Fla Sate 2
5- Auburn 2
Considering these fats teams with the SOS, Alabama is expected to be in the NC game very year, Fla State is doing well but Texas and Fla are real underachievers.
Recruiting is everything. Miles is not underachieving. If you want to criticize Miles criticize him for not having top 5 classes every year not for clock management.

Bama is almost winning the national title every year. In the age of limited scholarships I could argue what Saban is doing is even more impressive than what Bear did. Bear could sign as many as he wanted or what Bama allowed on a yearly basis.

Compare him to other teams today, Bear is dead and No, Saban is not overachieving.

It's uncanny really. It's success on a level that would make Lance Armstong, Barry Bonds, and Bernie Madoff jealous.

Keep in mind that back then, players couldn't leave early for the draft.

How strange has been the transition from primal loathing to begrudged admiration. with a heaping side of loathing

I promise you if LSU has top 5 class year after year they will be as good as Bama if not better no matter who the coach is.
