I took a look back at some of the better LSU recruiting classes during the Nick Saban and Les Miles era, and was somewhat surprised to find that the outcome of games and a team’s win/loss record does not usually have a big impact on the upcoming recruiting class. For example, let's take a look at the 2003 class, which was Nick Saban's finest at LSU and quite possibly the best ever at LSU. It featured JaMarcus Russell, Dwayne Bowe, Buster Davis, Matt Flynn and LaRon Landry and came on the heels of a 8-5, 5-3 season in which the Tigers suffered November losses to Alabama and Arkansas and lost to Texas in the Cotton Bowl on New Year’s Day. Coach Les Miles’ best class came in 2009 on the heels of a 8-5, 3-5 season in which the Tigers suffered three losses in November – to top-ranked Alabama on November 8, to Ole Miss on November 22 and to Arkansas on November 28. This class included the likes of Rueben Randle, Russell Sherpard, Craig Loston, Chris Davenport and Morris Claiborne. What this tells me is that a recruit’s decision is usually influenced more by what the team’s needs are at his position and by the player’s relationship with the staff than by a team’s win-loss record.

I thought 01 was considered his best class. though 03 was special as well.

No that's not right. Recruits clearly make their life-altering decision on where to go to school based on week to week game results. That's what people on here tell me.

The classes in Louisiana and nearby (Texas, Miss, etc) are more a factor than pulling W/L records. Sure, you have to have a great program, but it really is how good are the players that particular year in your recruiting footprint.

I'd go easy on Randle considering who he had throwing to him.

well i admit i had it wrong. I figured success breeds success. Course now that i think about it how did Ole Miss get such good recruiting classes the last two years when they stunk on the field for several years prior to that.

I'll contribute that things may have been more even as the series was even. If however Bama continues to win it might make things more difficult.

'02 was shite after we won a conference championship and sugar bowl. What saban put together in'01, '03, and '04 was scary good. He was really starting to pick it up and build a force.

Records tend to affect the class AFTER next. So the 2003 class was affected by the 2001 SEC championship and Sugar Bowl berth

Wrong again. Recruits make their life decisions solely on what is posted on this message board. That is what people on here tell me.

You're not reading the same rb I have been. Recruits base they're decisions on what's best for them and how they feel they would fit. Coaches, early playing time, etc are other variables.
