Who here thinks they can make primitive fire?

I've been wanting to try this, and I plan on go pro'ing the fail that is sure to ensue for y'alls pleasure. Obviously edited since even success appears to take quite a while.
So here thinks they could do it?
Which method?
What specific types of wood that are best to use?
I hereby challenge the OB to the first annual "fire off".

I did it when I was a kid with the little bow thing in Boy Scouts. I could do it now with a box of matches and some starter logs.

magnifying glass seems to work fastest and best.

I don't have to. So maybe I can. What does it matter to you?

Not primitive IMO.
I'm talking friction between two sticks.

Will you be my second stick? Big boy?

Not me. I can barely get one going with gasoline and starter logs.

Did it with flint and pocket knife. Does that count?

Never tried. I think with enough attempts and if my life were on the line I could figure it out

I agree
I have done what you're talking about but it was a long long time ago at a "survival" camp for 8-10 year olds.
ETA: We had a lot of help from some grown ups so maybe I haven't done it.

I can make regular fire. I don't mess with that old-timey fire though.

hell i can barely make it with gasoline and a lighter
Posted on 10/28/13 at 2:07 pm to Clyde Tipton
I know I can't, but then again I don't need to. (Thankfully)
I always have a lighter and toilet paper in my hunting pack, so if I happen to get in a bind, I can at least start a fire with that.

I'm thinking the bow drill is the best method...
But that has an issue with how primitve is string? I'd probably use paracord...

I'm in. I will see what I can do sometime this week with the kids.

Yeah, I figured it would be something constructive to play with at the camp.

We used to do it when I was younger with the bow method. Carve a little channel in 1 larger limb. Carve a simple hole in another larger diameter (but short) limb. Wrap the twine or vine around a smaller stick. Attach the twine to a long stick with a bow shape. We would put pinestraw in the channel in the large limb, then put the stick attached to the bow on top. Use the other large stick to put on top of the starter stick and hold pressure against it. It takes quite a while to get it hot enough...but it does work.
ETA: I was the little shite that got in trouble for starting a fire in the woods and letting it get slightly out of control when I was young.
