The Unbeliever

Could they ever make Covenant sympathetic after the rape?

Sure he thought it was a dream and he was overloaded almost high with healed sensitivity from The Land but would they really be able to convey that he truly had no idea he was raping someone.

Plus he was more than a tad of a whiny bitch for a while.

I would love to see The Land, Revelstone, Lord Mhoram's Victory and NOM up on the big screen.

Such a rich world Donaldson built but then he really tore it down with the 2nd chronicles. That would also make such a great movie albeit painful at times.

Probably the second fantasy series I read after The Hobbit / Lord of the Rings.

Haven't read the 3rd Chronicles. Did read the first book but didn't like the direction it took.

Wish they could make these movies but I fear they would have to change to much and rip out the heart and soul and yes pain in the books.

For a while? Try like 90% of the books. One of the most unlikable main characters ever. I don't think it would translate well to film at all, but then I've never been a huge fan of the series (though I read both the first and second chronicles). Not a terrible series, but not great either, particularly by the standards of today's fantasy.

I think Donaldson's Gap series would make a pretty badass sci fi movie series though.

I disagree. There were some great characters in the series. Especially the giants.

It would be more than a bit depressing.

Covenant wasn't nearly as whiny in the 2nd chronicles.

Heck it was pretty ballsy of Donaldson to pretty much destroy the land in the 2nd chronicles.

The main problem with the books and translation to movies is they would all be depressing as hell with so many good characters dying although Martin sure proved people have a larger tolerance for entertaining PAIN than one would actually think possible. Looking right at you RED WEDDING!

That's the thing really, Martin makes up for the depressing by having great and interesting characters you can relate to, and having amazing dialogue. Plus there is no true good and evil for the most part with the characters in GOT.

The strengths of the Convenant series is the Land itself and as you mentioned the Giants are pretty cool. Foul is a good bad as well. But unfortunately the entire story is centered around Thomas and he's an annoying, whiny, rapist twat. I actually think Donaldson is an excellent writer (his Gap series is one of my favorite sci fi series ever), but his writing couldn't overcome how annoying Covenant was for me.

And that would be a major detriment for it to translate to the movies. With GOT if you hate a particular character there are a ton of other interesting ones to choose to focus on. Thomas Covenant doesn't have that luxury.
