It was before the NCAA recognized a basketball champion, that's why not many know about it.

so how did they earn a crown? AP poll? playoff?

Defeated Pitt 41-37 in the championship game. Unfortunately don't know much else.

Not sure how it was crowned, but as stated the NCAA does not recognize any basketball championships prior to the installation of the NCAA tournament.
Edit: Apparently they won the American Legion Bowl National Championship game. Were one of several teams to earn a national title that year. We are the only school to claim an American Legion Bowl National Championship according to my google machine.

In the days before the NCAA Tournament, the Tigers won a 1935 mythical national championship (one of several mythical championships awarded that year) by defeating Pitt 41-37 in the American Legion Bowl National Championship game under head coach Harry Rabenhorst. Pitt, as Eastern Intercollegiate champions representing the best of the East, lost the season-ending contest in Atlantic City.[1] While this championship is not officially recognized by the NCAA since it did not sanction a tournament, LSU officially claims this championship and displays a banner in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. LSU is the only school that officially claims an American Legion Bowl championship. Rabenhorst also led the Tigers to the 1953 Final Four with a team that included future NBA Hall of Famer Bob Pettit.

It's still a better claim than several of Bama's football championships.

Does this mean that now all NCAA football championships will not be recognized prior to the 2014 playoff?

FWIW, the 1935 Gumbo lists the basketball team as National Champs... and the Gumbo has more journalistic integrity than the New York Times.

It's less legit than LSU's 1908 football title. If they recognize 1935 in basketball there's no reason LSU shouldn't recognize 1908 in football.
