Fifa/pro evolution, etc or GM/sim games

I go back to CM 97/98 with soccer management games, and tend to enjoy them more than the fifa/pro evolution games. A lot more individual player/team/ club dealings.

Although FIFA has come a long way in the management part of game.

I'll play ball.

My first real exposure to soccer (outside of a beast stint at keeper for my 7 year old team) was FIFA 64, which is why I'm a gross Manchester United fan. So, I'm partial to playing the matches and whatnot, and FIFA is my game of choice. It's got enough of an arcrade feeling than the sim feeling of Pro Evolution, which keeps it a bit more fun. I love taking the US National team up against a major club/national team and getting a win.

That said, I am starting to enjoy the management aspects of the games a lot more. Maybe it's my love of raw statistics playing a role and how it all fits together, but I'm moving that direction more and more.

Is this a question between FIFA or Football Manager?

If so, I'll go with FIFA. I like having total control. However, Football Manager is incredibly fun.

I thought fm2012 and 2013 kind of went backwards.

I still play 2011, even though i own both.

what sucks is that all of the guys who would make editors and save editors stopped, and 1 guy is doing it and charging. fm/cm was always about the community. YOu made an editor for the community and another community mate would make a save game editor, another made roster update, etc Now it's a different community to a point. People wanting or wanting to be paid for doing anything.

What's the market like? I'm a software engineer, and I may or may not have the skill set to target something like this as a portfolio filler for diversity, if the userbase is decent. Would an open-source tool to help the community do it for themselves be something that would be used? Is it a tool issue, or is it more that people just don't want to do the editing and roster updating?

Anyone ever play PES? I've never thought of getting it since most of the teams are made up.

It's not terrible, but it is different from FIFA a good bit. It feels more like a sim than anything to me.

I only play Pro Clubs so I fricking hate FIFA. But it's all I have if I want to play soccer, so I'm screwed into coming back to it even when it makes me want to destroy my room.

Some how they have the exclusive license to the Champions League. I know you can play in a European championship in FIFA but you don't get the atmosphere and the theme song.

I'm die hard football manager if I'm doing manager mode, the time commitment is just extensive to say the least. Mostly play FIFA for online or against friends. That is second to none as far as video games go, in my opinion.

I raged and smashed a controller to pieces for the first time ever playing FIFA 12. As I realized what I had done, I hung my head in shame while browsing through Best Buy's collection of new Xbox controllers. That day, I was playing again. Granted, it was my frustration with the new defending, but I've never before or since been that angry at a video game ever.
