Baseball umpire help.

This is the situation, bases loaded groundball is hit striking the runner that is on second going to third. The ball ricochets to the second baseman and touches second forcing the runner that was on first out.

I thought that once the ball hits a base runner, the runner is out and everyone is allowed to move up one base. Is this correct or is the umpires ruling correct.

I think the runner is out and it's just a dead ball and everyone returns to their base. I could be wrong though.

ETA: any runner occupying a base other than 1st returns to their base

Wasn't sure about all runners moving one base but knew if runner was forced that they would get the next base. Umpires excuse was that's how they played when he was playing. I just let it go but wanted to teach him something.
