Bitter pill may be best medicine to propel Tigers to greatness.

Look, like everyone else, I had hopes of 14-0 this season.

But it has become very obvious to me, that our defense has been taking way too long to grow up, and my biggest question has now become "Can our defense mature in time for us to compete for the SEC West title?"

Well, yesterday's loss proved beyond any doubt that our 2013 defense is not maturing and improving fast enough.

But how can Chavis motivate these kids to make a big leap forward quickly and mature into a solid SEC defense?

Well, this bitter taste of defeat and being exposed on national tv may provide Chief the best tools he could ask for. He can now get the full attention of his players when he tells them that they must elevate their performance quickly to a much higher level.

Also, if we have to accept one loss this season, this was the best possible one.

First, our offense shined against a highly-regarded SEC team on the road, in a shootout decided by just a field goal. It was the kind of game that everyone knows could have gone either way. We are still a strong contender for the top prize.

Second, we did not lose to any of our rivals in the SEC West.

Third, if we can win out from here, we well may have the opportunity to avenge our only loss, by defeating Georgia in a rematch at the SEC Championship. That win will go a long way with voters in the final BCS poll to greatly discount our earlier road loss at Georgia, which will be the only blemish on our otherwise very impressive resume.

So... what do we need to do, to make that scenario actually happen?

Just one thing - get our defense to start playing grown man football. That is the only weakness of this 2013 LSU football team.

Coach Miles and Coach Chavis will embrace this teachable moment and fully employ it to motivate our defense to get better.

This bitter loss may well prove to be the tool that jolts these kids to dramatically elevate their game and help their team achieve its goals.

When we get to the SEC Championship game at season end, we will look back and realize that yesterday's close road loss at Georgia was a blessing in disguise.

It was the wake-up call that exposed our defense and also motivated those players to step up their game and become another great LSU defensive unit.

Do not give up on these Tigers!
They still control their own destiny, all the way to the BCS Championship Game in Pasadena, if they can keep winning.

And, if LSU does happen to get to the SEC Championship and beyond, I think it will only have become possible for this team, because of the hard lessons learned from the tough road loss at Georgia yesterday.

Miles philosophy is that the offseason is for adjustments, especially major ones. Once the season kicks off, he lives of dies with what he has at that point unless injuries or arrests make him adjust. So at this point this is what you will get.

I agree with the OP. And Diggy you need to stop following LSU. We really don't need the negativity you constantly spout. Geeze!

Defense finally played some competition and weren't ready. No where to go but up from here. They will be fine.

Don't just follow the Tigers, but support them and the University VERY well. Put my money where my positivity is. I can see where you take it as negativity. I am just pointing out reality. Usually get the GFY, hope you die stuff but never a "you are 100% wrong". Come from the life of hard knocks to make something of myself. Always believe in hearing it straight with no rah rah BS.

I agree. A one loss LSU Tiger team gets in the natty. Well, any one loss SEC team gets there, but I like how I believe we will look after we win the SEC championship against Georgia. That is going to be the real natty.

That was one hell uva game yesterday. Sure, we had a dropped punt, we had a TD pass to Beckham overthrown, our defense sucked, our QB looked NFLish. Today, the LSU Tigers of 2013 woke up.

Cannot wait until next Saturday. We win big from here on out. Take that to your banker.

That is completely ridiculous. You think Miles and Chavis won't try to coach up this immature defense?

I predict that this loss is the wake-up call our defense and their coaches needed right now.

Chavis and his staff are gonna use this teachable moment to motivate their players to step up big time.

11-1 in December baby, thanks greatly to lessons learned in September by our immature defense, from a tough road loss at Georgia.

Oh, and I truly hope Georgia gets to the SEC Championship to receive its rightful payback beatdown from a great LSU team at that time.

Ditto!!! We're still in this thing. I'm just glad fans did not do a lot of whining/complaining after this loss. Running the table is hard to do (as you all know). Being in the SEC West is tough enough, but having to play a good GA team on the road was not going to be easy. We weren't fortunate enough to get an "easy" East team, however, I too, think Chief and CLM will use this loss as a teaching tool for our defense to grow stronger!

At this point, I wonder if we should maybe concern ourselves with one game at a time and not look too far into the future.

I'm glad this game was early in the season. Gives our young guys experience in hostile enviroments playing against very good teams. Will help us down the road

Of course, the team has to focus on each game, as the season moves along.

But the players and coaches must also appreciate their long-range opportunities, because those will help motivate the team to steadily improve.

Already this season, there are not many teams left, with even a possibility of going all the way to the promised land.

But we can still finish with one loss, a close road loss to a great SEC team. And, we may even be able to avenge that single loss at the SEC Championship. If we beat UGA in a second game, our 12-1 record will be better than some at 13-0.

Remember Miles' clever slogan in 2007?
"LSU is undefeated in regulation."

That slogan worked with the pollsters, and we snuck in at #2 in the final BCS ranking.

Well, if we win out and beat UGA in Atlanta, Miles will be saying "LSU played 6 top 25 teams and beat them all."

We can sneak in again if we run the table, maybe even ahead of an undefeated team with a weaker schedule.

So we must use that motivation in our approach, to give ourselves the best chance of improving and winning that next game, while also keeping our ultimate goal alive and out in front.

These Tigers' quest ain't gonna be over til it's over, and it aint over yet.
