Poltergeist is one of those old movies you do not find very often. It scares you by f**in with your head. It takes its time to tell a story. Very well done story, characters, build up etc. The acting was excellent. Most of the "scary" movies these days use gimmicks like "boo" type scares. And CGI etc. Very few try to do what the original movie did, which is let the story and development, and acting mess with your head. And scare you that way. Alot like Carrie, the Shining and alot of movies from that era.

Poltergeist is a great example of a horror film being scary while not using cheap tactics, gore and playing down to the audience.

What makes Poltegeist even a bit more creepy is the two actors who played the daughters died very young... the older sister a few years after release and the younger daughter shortly after Poltegeist 2.

The clown scene is the reason why I hate clowns now.
