.308 WIN Rifle Owners - Ammo Question
Posted on 9/26/13 at 9:08 pm

First off I'm not trying to start a ballistic tip debate here. I've decided to go with a soft point round (in lieu of a ballistic tip). What grain of ammo do you use in your .308 and why?

165gr Sierra Game King is an excellent bullet for deer.

Pops shoots 150s because that's what his gun likes.

Hard to find right now but 168 grain core lokt are nice for deer.

I had my eye on this - believe it's loaded by Federal.

OG checking in.
For 20 years, I used 180 gr, rem, soft point core lockt,, my shots were a 150 or less with the 308.
If I were to use that gun in a little more open areas, I would use Rem 150 gr, psp, which is what I use in my 7 mags now...

Depends on twist rate and what shoots best.

Geauxt you know I take your word as gospel but you also know my current stance on Remington products.

You have that right and I respect it... All of my big gun loads as well as all my Remington arms were bought way before they acted stupid..

Planned on trying several brands but the rifle is a Weatherby Vanguard Series 2.

Whatever factory ammo shoots the 165 sierra game king would be good.
Do you reload?

150 gr shoots better out of my .308

Pistol only at this point. I'm not set up to reload rifle at this time.

150gr BTSP (boat tail soft point). This combination has worked well for me. BTSP are accurate and have good expansion.

Judge,
Were I to shoot factory loads in one of my 308's it would be a 150 gr grain, pointed soft point, conventional load (i.e. non-premium bullet) from either Remington, Federal, Winchester or Hornady. I'd go w/ whichever shoots best and is available. If you're shooting close range, 165's or 180's would be ok, but if you get a longer shot, you'll wish you had the flatter shooting round. In the 308, the 150 grain load has the best combination of energy, accuracy, penetration and trajectory.

150 because when I pull trigger stuff dies, cause I zeroed scope with it, and cause I caught it on sale for 11 dollars a box of 20. Got couple hundred rounds.
