Walking Dead Question (No Spoilers)

I just recently started watching walking dead and I am only half way through season 2 so no spoilers but I have a question.
Why don't they just ride around and mow zombies over with their cars. They could have just gone to the middle of town laid on the horn till they all come and hit them with their cars. I feel like I would do better than they did in a zombie apocalypse.
I know it makes for more drama the way the show is playing out but it is just unrealistic. (I know a show about zombies is unrealistic but you still have to make the story believable)

You realize that most of the planet is turned. There are basically unlimited zombies compared to survivors. That plan would result in quick death.

You don't have to kill all of them on the planet. Only the ones in the town you're living in. I also agree that they need a moat.

Note to self: If ZA ever happens, don't let CM Tiger83 join your survivor group unless you want to die and have your transportation get destroyed.
