Yellowstone Getting Ready For The Big One?

"Until recently, Bob Smith had never witnessed two simultaneous earthquake swarms in his 53 years of monitoring seismic activity in and around the Yellowstone Caldera.

Now, Smith, a University of Utah geophysics professor, has seen three swarms at once.

“It’s very remarkable,” Smith said. “How does one swarm relate to another? Can one swarm trigger another and vice versa?”

I hope I die immediately. I don't want to be around for the famine and ensuing anarchy.

Has there been much in the way of studies of projected fatalities of that going?

I do know that if you are within a certain range (that extends hundreds of miles), ash fall will kill you due to pretty much all structures being unable to support of the weight of the cumulated fall.

“We know that a significant enough earthquake in the region has potential to alter geyser activity,” the spokesman said. “A strong enough earthquake, like the one that occurred out at Hebgen Lake in 1959, did change the interval of Old Faithful eruptions.”

That quake, a 7.3 to 7.5 on the Richter magnitude scale, caused nearly 300 features on the Yellowstone landscape to erupt, 160 of which had no previous record of geysers.

Smith traced the three recent earthquake swarms to the Hebgen Lake quake.

“These are a really related,” he said.

“We think that much of the seismicity is still aftershocks from that event in 1959. It can go on for hundreds of years.”

i did a lot of research on this once and if i remember correctly it takes something like 500 years for the chamber to fill with magma and there's no reason to believe this process has even started yet.

oh and also even if there is an eruption it won't necessarily be the worst case scenario eruption

Not at all saying this is a big one, or even an impending minor eruption

But this is wrong.

Suggestive evidence has been there for years of a refilling. If I remember right, it predates our recording of such things, so we don't know when it started.

You can't get "ready" for that one. It's an iVolcano. Complete game changer.

i'm a little awkward here because i read up on this several years ago and i don't remember exactly what it was that i read (other than it was an academic article written by some professor who knows a shitload about this stuff) but the bottom line is that i felt a lot better about this afterwards.

Yeah. I just wished I was closer to the eruption, since I'm likely going to instead slowly starve to death.

Plus they have plenty of leftover trailers from Katrina just waiting to be used again. Mmm, formaldehyde!
