Ramifications of the 2022 WC being moved to winter for NFL and College Football

Yea I am looking way ahead in my crystal ball but...
This could be a major windfall for the NFL, NCAA and US Soccer alike. Say they move it to December/January timeframe. That is right in the middle of bowl season for college football and right at the start of the NFL playoffs. Then if they move it to January- February time frame, the Super bowl and Conference championship games could be competing with the World Cup.
One of the reasons why the World Cup is at such a great time for Americans is that there is nothing on the sporting landscape to compete with it. The 2022 world cup could be a major clusterfrick and money drain for Fox. I would imagine US Soccer would seek a lot of compensation from FIFA if the move to the winter goes through.

I still can believe they are going to move the world cup smack dab in the middle of the European club seasons.
frick corrupt Fifa.

I just don't believe that it will go through. I'd rather the Qatari's spend a shite ton of money building indoor stadiums than move the WC to the winter. What I hope happens is that the WC is moved somewhere with the infrastructure in place to handle it.

it's pretty much a foregone conclusion.

it won't.
and yeah, fox should be really pissed if the WC moves to CFB bowl season and NFL now that they play 3 nights a week. That will crush their ratings. i know soccer has grown a lot, but a WC final on a Sunday afternoon in December would be a disaster. Fox should legitimately consider pursuing legal action with FIFA if that happens.

That's pretty disappointing. Let's hope Qatar's oil economy collapses.

Especially if the big market East coast teams are in the playoff hunt. Regardless, the ratings would be fricked

They produce more natural gas than oil FWIW.

Right, the ratings overlap would be on weekends. Weekday games would still be televised during the day and not conflict with anything except Ellen and Family Feud.

Haha. I've been super wrong in this thread.

What time zone is Qatar even in? Seems like it would be so early in the day that it would hardly conflict with bowl season and playoffs, but I do see where you are coming from. I personally don't care when it is I'm watching it over anything else on TV. I'd watch a usmnt group stage match over any NFL or CFB game LSU and Saints included.

Good point. There will be a lot of 10 a.m. kickoffs stateside methinks.

8 hour difference from CST. would be interesting. Sunday at 8am is when the final would be played (if times are the same as they are in Brazil) which is a horrific time for ratings regardless.
most of the matches would be at 13:00 (5am CST) to 19:00 (11am CST) with a couple at 21:00 (1pm CST). the times themselves will kill ratings probably. NFL and CFB make tape delays even less viable then they already are in this climate. though we say this...i fully expect some pretty awesome viewing advances in the next 9 years. we'll probably be viewing the WC in ways we don't expect/can't imagine.

Fox isn't too happy with the prospect of the Winter World Cup, and already voiced its displeasure to FIFA.
If there is one sect of society to whom FIFA will listen, it's the broadcast partners stuffing FIFA's pockets.
If Fox and possibly another major broadcast partner (possibly another NewsCorp outlet) protest, FIFA is SOL.

FIFA doesn't listen to the fans. FIFA listens to the money. Fox brings the money. Fox listens to the fans. FIFA listens to the fans.

Wonder if Fox could sue for breach of contract. They should shelled out all this money for a summer WC specifically bc the WC falls in such a dead period of American sports.
The federations might take action too. Saw Australia is asking for a bunch of money from Fifa bc they're bid was rejected under the impression Qatar was hosting a summer WC

I'm hoping for a 3D projector inserted directly into my anus.
