Is he hoping for a VIX spike on ME unrest?

He could lose over $25 million by the end of September.

According to the comments, he will have this hedged all over the place if the VIX nears 30.

With size that big I'd start looking into counterparty risk just to be sure. He might have a hard time collecting if he really hits it big.

So if that guy makes the big bucks, what did he produce of value in order to earn that sum?

He was willing to take the risk the other party didn't want.

Think of it this way - suppose you buy a house in Florida. You don't want the risk of of losing it in a hurricane so you buy property insurance.

The insurance company may not want to deal with the risk of insuring a couple thousand homes in Florida when Hurricane Gigantic hits, so they in turn sell a bunch of options and futures, thereby transferring the risk to many individuals.

Each individual, by accepting a very small share of risk, has offered something of value.

You know a lot about options trading and finance in general for someone with a Physics background. Do you have an MFin degree or something?

Fair question.

B.S. Physics, UT Austin. Focused on high temperature superconductors, very fashionable at the time.
MBA, LSU
Took all the required courses for the Ph.D. in Finance, LSU. Decided I didn't want to go the academic route. Basically I was young and went to the wrong school to go the mortgage backed securitization route, which is what I really wanted to do but hadn't realized it at the time.

Wound up doing IT/Accounting consulting in DC. A pretty good gig actually, it pays nicely but I do sometimes wonder.

You can turn $1 into hundreds of millions in less than a week if you buy the right lotto ticket.

I don't think that does it. I think he's crossing his fingers that Iran or Russia jumps in as well.

That combined with other poor economic figures like the Jobs report today, Fed tapering, etc would.

For reference, the VIX hasn't been at 30 since the late Summer/Fall of 2011. Additionally, over the past 10 years it has risen between 27-30 only once without going above 30. It has risen above 30 5-6 times in that time period
