Want to play Saints Row games

Trying to decide where to start. Does the story carry over from one to the next? Thinking about starting on 2 or 3. Any recommendations on this?

Each game gets more and more stupid, though that's not a bad thing. SR2 is the perfect mix of serious and over the top goofyness. If you want something more serious start with one of the first two. Story doesn't really matter.

Is the first one worth playing? I was concerned that with the graphical and gameplay improvements after it caught some attention and had better development that the first might be poor in comparison.

I thought these games were more Grand Theft Auto-y with more street gang stuff. This new one looks like some kind of Mass Effect spinoff

Negative on both. SRIV is a better version of Crackdown if you played that.

Saints Row IV does feel like the Crackdown game we should have had years ago.
