Is it legal for a DL to tackle a RB behind LOS who is attempting to run a screen pass?

Is the LOS the determining factor?

You can "bump" someone for 5 yards off the LOS. That's why CB's can press a WR at the LOS.

You aren't supposed to grab but you can bump them all you want. If there was any kind of playaction, then you can tackle the runner.

No. See Rule 9-3-, and I believe it's subsection 4 for the details.

Thanks. Just rewatched LSU/TCU and LSU ran a couple of screen passes (not from playaction) and it appeared the defenders grabbed the RBs. The refs were letting them play in basically all aspects of the game so thats prob why it wasnt called.

It is holding. Rarely called unless bear hugged well before ball arrives.

You can as long as the ball isn't it the air when contact is made.

Eta: this is also the best way to stop a bootleg waggle. Just tackle the underneath route as they release.

On pass behind the LOS (screen pass), the defender can push the receiver out of the way or play through him or knock him on his arse while the ball is in the air. It's not a foul because the pass does not cross the LOS.
It's when a defender TACKLES anyone other than a runner does a foul occur.

So if what you're saying is true, on these step back WR screens the DB can come up and knock him on his arse while the ball's in the air?

Yes....they can. There can be no DPI if the ball does not cross the LOS.
