You can punt this thread if you want, but someone please answer this quesiton first: Why is "LSU" on the helmets black instead of purple? Anyone ever thought about that?

It's the only thing that's black on their uniforms, and I want to know why, Dip.

It is only Black lettering if you don't truly believe in the Tigers .

Why is "LSU" on the helmets black

Never said anything is wrong with it if it's black. Just want to know why; is there a special significance that is is black? And yes, it's BLACK. Go to a sporting good strore where they sell authentic helmets, and you'll see LSU in black on the helmets.

1893
Tulane played its first varsity football game on Nov. 18, 1893, dropping a 12-0 decision to the Southern Athletic Club. Things were a bit less formal in those days, as witnessed by the fact that Tulane Coach T.L. Bayne also played in the game-for the opponent! In his spare time, T.L. Bayne hustled over to Baton Rouge to help coach LSU. This made for an interesting afternoon of Nov. 25, 1893, when Tulane and LSU played for the first time. Hugh Bayne, brother of the coach and a Tulane law student, scored the first touchdown ever for Tulane to open a 34-0 rout. T.L. Bayne did not play that day because his wife died three days earlier and he was returning from her funeral. He did not have the green ribbons (Tulane) nor the purple and gold ribbons (LSU) but he was still wearing the black mourning ribbons from the funeral home/ St. Charles cemetery #4. Black ribbons were accepted as an official LSU color at that time. This color has always been used for LSU and today is used on the helmets in memory of the first LSU football game. He was on the field as umpire (LSU's coach was the referee- wearing black ribbons, also).
