New car purchase

Help me convince my girlfriend buying a new car Is unnecessary. She has a 2000 Honda crv with 100k miles on it. From what I've witnessed Hilda's run forever with proper maintenance. Her reasoning for getting a new vehicle Is that she plans on having this car for the next 3-4 years and she does not want it to break down like it has been doing. The breaking down she's speaking of is the need for an alignment, the passenger door lock gets stuck, the driver window motor has gone out, and the cigarette lighter has issues
Trying to sell that vehicle and buy a new one is just silly IMO and I feel she just wants something new. Side note she's going to grad school next year...frugality is key IMO. TIA

Agree with you 100k is nothing for a Honda. Of course she wants something new. Save the money for grad school, and not have a car note. Do not think those are major concerns at all, however if you start having transmission issues, oil leaks etc it might be time to start thinking of getting rid of it!

how much will all that cost to fix? just curious.
I would sell her on what she will be able have in bank ready to buy if she saves the car note each month until she finishes school. Offer to kick in a bonus if she sticks it out (if you are really serious about her long term).

Had a 98 Accord v-6 250k miles, was fixing it to sell, wrecked it, sold it for $600.00. 5 people called me for it, body guy bought it, fixed it, sold it for $2k.
Keep the car. With those low miles, as long as the air works, it will always be woth a few grand. It is a Honda!!

If she can afford to pay cash for a new car, then okay. If she has to finance it - show her the Dave Ramsey "Drive free, retire rich" video - I've always found that girls like money.

My youngest bought an Accord Wagon for $2000 - it had 300k miles on it. 8 months, only oil changes and recharge of the A/C. She may get $1250 when she sells it (to family) before she goes to basic training - and that means she drove it for about $4.50 to $5 a day, including gasoline and maintenance.
Try to drive a car for $5 a day.

Thbaka everyone. That's how I was thinking about it but I just needed a little more ammunition for my talk
She's definitely not paying cash she would be doing something very silly that I will not even discuss. I'll bookmark this thread and report the results for entertainment purposes.

Alignment between $70-$90
Possible door latch $29.95
Window Motor- after market $69, OEM $95 or more.
Haynes Manual- $12
Original Honda Shop Manual- $35-$80
Ebay acct/Amazon Acct-free
You can fix everything you list for less than $300.00
You probably have more than that to fix, she is a woman. I doubt maintenance is totally up to spec.
Buy a book and some tools, have her help you fix it. Relationship building at its best.

Not terrible advice in most times, but these days if you have good credit you can borrow for less than the rate of inflation. That is better than paying cash now.
That said, buying new is not the way to save money no matter how you pay for it. In her situation buying used is the only way to go if she's going to buy at all.
I think she wants a new car because she wants to impress her other boyfriend.

I'm curious....is your girlfriend's name "Hilda"?

Yes. She ran one time, he witnessed that one run on a video that loops forever, and he was properly maintained while doing so.
