Please help! I've never done an auction draft before, and my league drafts tomorrow.

What is the general strategy for this type of draft? Should I spend most of my money on 3 or 4 can't-miss players, or spread my money around to try and get a balanced team top to bottom?

What players should I try to target - the best ones overall, or the ones I consider undervalued?

What is the average price for a top player at each position (QB, RB, WR, TE)? My league has a $200 cap and starts 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE.

Thanks in advance.

I like to go after the buy low guys for the year. I almost always target Kenny Britt, for example.

Every auction is different. Make sure you do your research, and know what you want to spend on certain players.
Get the players you definitely want on your team out the way first and if you have to spend a little more to have them on your team do so.
If you value player X at 50 and you have to bid 55 to get him (that's onlt 10% difference in value). It's worth it, if you really value someone.

excellent advice.

Also, if most of the people in your league are new to auction drafting be ready for people to spend insane amounts early on some guys. Spending half your budget on AD might seem like an awesome idea since he's being rated 1st overall, but your team needs more than 1-2 studs.

Place bids on guys you have no interest in first. Let people fight over them, waste their cap, and you mop up when they start getting tight with their remaining cap.

I would also say, esp. if you are using any apps., websites, programs, or notes while drafting to do a couple of mock drafts using the same stuff so you can be familiar with how they work during crunch time and understand the pace.

Question: Is it possible to spend all $200 on my starting position players (QB, RB, WR, TE), then pick up my defense, kicker, and bench players for free on the waiver wire?

Hypothetically speaking, of course. Basically, are you forced to buy all 16 players on your team, or can you spend all your auction money on a select few? Just curious.

With only 2 wrs I'd get a solid wr1 then bargain shop my wr2. Get 2 top 12 rbs. Go cheap at qb since there's a lot of depth at the position.

In any auction the strategy is to go in with a plan but remain flexible enough to adapt to how the auction is playing out.

depends on the league but most make you fill out a complete roster

ESPN, yahoo, rtsports wont let you spend everything without filling the roster. it will always make sure you are left with a $1 for every position that isnt filled

I mean, you can still kind of do it. You can basically spend it all and be left with $7 or $8 for your bench.

That's the point of an auction draft you have to fill your roster. That means if you have 15 players and a $100 budget $86 will be left over for one player or more.

Btw, whatever advice you get throw it in trashcan. You can plan as much as you want and not get any of the players you want. It's how the auction works. Make 3 plans and kind of gel them together once it gets going. You never know who you'll end up with.

Nominate players that you think are overrated and watch people spend their money on them.

Nominate a top kicker for $2 and watch people spend $3 dollars on them. Kickers usually can be bought at a $1. Spending an extra dollar on Bryant or Walsh isn't a bad thing. It's the dick move of the draft.

just make sure you only nominate them for $1. You don't want to nominate someone for $10 that you have no intention of buying and then have everyone sit on it and you're stuck with him.

I'm talking about nominating guys you believe are overvalued early in the draft. Depending on your perception....maybe a David Wilson, montee ball, or desean Jackson. Guys who have some fantasy value that you may not be interested in. Not that their bad fantasy options, but if ou make people commit early to them it may change the way they field their team.

Our draft got moved back to today. I did a 12-team mock last night and came away with the best team I've ever drafted:

Colin Kaepernick
Doug Martin, Ray Rice, Lamar Miller
Demaryius Thomas, Dwayne Bowe
Jermichael Finley
Steelers D/ST
Gostkowski

All my backups were $1 guys, but I kind of like that strategy.

Thanks for all the advice in this thread!
