Sorry buddy, but this is the right answer. Its not that we don't produce top level athletes, its that those athletes usually play one of the big three sports. Keep in mind that I'm not speaking strictly about raw athleticism, but all of the qualities that make up a supreme athlete: quickness of thought, field/court vision, creativity, etc. Jason Kidd or CP3, had they played soccer, would probably be amazing midfielders. Randy Moss, Kobe, or MJ would make amazing strikers. Simply stated, the best athletes in the U.S. do not play soccer.

Dude you are insane if you think we have don't have "athletes" playing soccer that are far more athletic than guys like Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Schweinsteger, Ribery, Gotze, Ozil, Pirlo, Lampard, Mata, Cole, Terry, Hazard, Oscar, Higuain, Suarez, Tevez, pretty much anyone on the Mexican Nat'l team... I mean the list could go on and on and on.

Lack of decent athletes playing soccer is probably last on the list of problems.

Seriously, you should watch highlights of top athletes with a more discriminating eye. It's not just about physical ability. The greats have vision, creativity, and quickness of thought that separates them from the other amazingly gifted athletes. I'll consider your argument as soon as I see an American player with the ball skill of Totti, Zidane, Riberie, Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar, etc. I think Altodore, Bradley, and Donovan are certainly some of the top athletes in the country, but that's only three of our 23 that MIGHT be in the Top 100 in this nation.

edit: And yet we still compete.

The reason our athletes don't have the same "ball skill" is because people (even soccer players) don't play soccer in the streets everyday like other countries do.

It's a skill that requires hours and hours of practice to hone and perfect. Also, until recently high level soccer was almost non existant on television so kids had no one to watch and emulate.

It has nothing to do with not being athletic enough.

Semantics. We're not talking about sprinters or decathletes. Its not about pure ability. We're talking about soccer players. The U.S produces supreme players, see my aforementioned list, but our best athletes are not playing soccer. Drew Brees is a qb, Chris Paul is a point guard, and Lebron James plays 1-4 for a basketball team. Besides Altidore, not one soccer player in America possesses the ownership of their respective sports as the ATHLETES I just mentioned.

Your argument is a flat one.

You racist bastards.

I think it´s pretty amazing that a Dominican gets to this level (playing professionally in the world´s best league). I really do.

That's cool, it really is, and I'm happy for him.

But the thread is about the US's lack of stars, not Dominicans.

1. People in this thread pointed out players from obscure parts of the world (with respect to football). The Dominican Republic fits the bill.

2. CWill, you´re in over your head. Kindly please opine, when you know what you´re speaking about.

This is true. Nobody has ever argued otherwise.

However, your assertion that lack of athleticism amongst soccer players is our problem is still absurd.

This. All of it. I wish more people understood this. Lack of athletes is not a concern at all, ask fans from other countries when they come play here, they'll be the first to admit the size disparity most teams have vs us. We pass the eye test getting off the bus, no doubt.

Soccer is a passion, and way of life, and a way to a better life for a lot of people overseas. It's just a hobby/sport to some people here, thats just how it is.
Even Jurgen Klinsmann has said the same. American players typically lack the flair and creativity of other nations because they're not playing 24/7 from the time they can walk, and playing in the streets, playing "streetball", inventive type soccer.

2 team league, and those two teams are worse than Germany's best two teams.

So there. I've opined.
