The reality is, yes they are. All of these unalented players you speak of are starters for some of the best club teams in the world. United, City, Chelsea, Arsenal, etc don't just hand out starting spots based on a player being English.

They're not untalented. Just overrated individually and vastly overrated as a unit.

Stupid analogy. Not accurate either. And not funny, as you had intended. I'm winning this argument.

You can believe that if you want. It won't change the fact that England hasn't put legitimate contender on the field since 2002 and won't be doing so for the foreseeable future.

Serious question here. Since the 2006 World Cup, what has England done to make anyone think they're far ahead of the USA? What about their current form makes you think they're way more talented than America?

Just because they haven't made it to the semis or finals at the WC or Euros, doesn't mean they haven't been legitimate contenders. They have been beaten by better teams. Germany, Argentina, Portugal, Italy, etc. I don't know this for a fact, but I don't think they have been favored to win any of the matches they have lost at a major tournament.

Either way, I'm tired of sticking up for England. Agree to disagree. Cheers man

I'm sorry, but don't you think the fact that they always run into a better team before reaching the semifinals is a glaring indicator that they're not a legitimate contender?

I mean, your argument is ridiculous. Argentina haven't reached the final four in over 20 years.

You're trying to be smarter than you actually are. Nobody is arguing that the English team is reaching the pinnacle of success, but that doesn't change the fact that their best 11 is better across the board than ours is.

Howard, Donovan, Dempsey and Bradley are the only players who would currently challenge for a place. Howard is the only one who could legitimately start in the WC for them and arguably be an improvement over the current player in that spot.

Does that not make sense or do you think Hart is vastly superior to Howard?

The latter, but perhaps not in such strong terms.

I would agree with this, although I don't like to admit it.

As of right now, the two teams are on entirely different levels.

I'll admit they're more talented as a unit, but people make the gap out to be enormous and it's just ridiculous. Look at how qualifying is going for England right now. Their group is weaker than the Hex.

I do hope the USA and England meet each other in the knockout round of 2014. And it goes to penalties... Howard vs Hart.

Oh wait, it's the World Cup, penalties and England. the Brits are automatically toast.

Hart is pretty good at stopping penalties. I wouldn't want that matchup at all.

Now that I think about it, I don't know much about Howard and penalties at all.

If Hart is better than Howard, it's by a marginal amount.

Hart is absurdly overrated by PL viewers.

English people overrate English players. Any team worth a shite in the PL relies on foreigners.

Americans tend to overrate English players as well. Generally Americans only watch the team they root for. They just ride the bandwagon-opinion on all other players/teams.

Actually the other poster had it more accurately. No team gets unjustly blasted as much as England.

quote:

There has been nothing special about any of their recent teams

Nothing special no but they are perennial knockout round participants in almost every major tournament. Further, if they had even a half decent penalty record they would be one of the more successful clubs of the last 20-25 years.

quote:

nothing special about the vast majority of players I've seen in recent years.

Maybe but even still, and this really proves my initial point in this thread, Dempsey or Donovan still aren't starting in that midfield.

I underrate the shite out of English players. I just think Hart is pretty far up there, and I've seen him plenty.
