My first foray to the esteemed Music Board - I trust such a question is not out of line.

Bringing a hard drive along on a recent family trip resulted in my receiving the entirety of my brother-in-law's library. We share similar taste in music, but I've never been terribly deep WRT Mr. Young. I now have pretty much his entire work.

Looking for a place to start - the defining studio albums and his best live stuff. I did a search which yielded one poster's top five Neil Young albums, which I've noted. Looking for a few more opinions.

I greatly appreciate any and all input.

Yeah - but I've got a lot of other sh*t going for me.

Thanks, Stache.

Harvest and the Decade compilation are the most obvious starting points

Roger, Kafka - I've at least cleared this hurdle.

The Frampton Comes Alive Tide sample bit / joke from Wayne's World comes to mind.

Everybody Knows This is Nowhere and After the Gold Rush are my favorites. His last album wasn't bad either. If you want to dig deep, his archive set is amazing.

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere was my first Neil Young album.

I credit "Down by the River" with sparking my interest in jamming and long, extended grooves. I remember to this day hearing it for the first time when I was 14 and being blown away. Truly an eye opener for me.

Oh and "Cowgirl in the Sand" is on that album. Don't get me started on the epicness of that piece....

But other great Neil albums have been mentioned in here. On the Beach, Tonight's the Night, Harvest, Rust Never Sleeps, and even last year's Psychedelic Pill are all fantastic. Live at Fillmore East 1970 is pretty fricking rocking as well.

Neil Young is the greatest Canadian ever and one of the greatest artists ever

Thanks all for the input.

I'm test driving all of the albums cited in the above posts except Rust Never Sleeps, which isn't in the collection. There is a title called Live Rust.

Thanks again, MB

danman's NY rankings:

1. After the Goldrush
2. Rust Never Sleeps
3. Harvest
4. Zuma
5. On the Beach

The Crazy Horse stuff is good, but Neil might be the most overrated guitarist of all time. He's really not that good. His later songwriter-y stuff is a lot better, imo

:ducks:

His tone ("Hey Hey My My" is a good example) is so influntial to the entire alternative movement, especially (and obviously) grunge.

Also, the two aforementioned guitar workouts on Everybody Knows This is Nowhere are pretty damn good, as well as his duel with Stephen Stills on the "Southern Man" from 4 Way Street .

Jan 28th 2012 Jam

I was so stoked when they streamed this last winter. A heavy, 37 minute jam with frickin' Up and Cortez the Killer. Not for the faint of heart
