Obviously I never got to see the Mick in person, since I'm only 28. I've seen Trout play in person a couple of times. Mantle is the comparison that's being thrown around for him right now.

Mick had it all, but his dadgum knees didn't have it with him, otherwise his already ridiculous numbers may have entered other stratospheres.

Trout seems to have every tool in spades. The one element I really questioned was the power. Yes, Trout can hit them out, and should be good for 30+ a year, but Mantle has a mythology of being one of the Kings of Clout and hitting (likely fictionalized) 600-foot bombs). I wasn't so sure Trout had that in them.

Which is why it surprised me to learn that he's currently 2nd in all of MLB for Avg. HR distance in 2013.

Do you guys think Trout will continue on that power trajectory? Let's not forget he's just 22 and most guys don't really find that ridiculous power stroke until mid-20s/early-30s.

Is there a better comparison?

He is slower than Mickey was and can't hit balls as far but overall its a pretty good one.

I don't know if anyone can party as hard as Mantle did while still producing at the level he produced at.

Mantle had the fastest time to 1st of any player ever......from BOTH sides of the plate!!!!

LINK

Mantle was clocked at 3.1 (fastest documented time in MLB)

Bo Jackson was timed at 3.2 (3.65 from the right side)

Deion Sanders was timed at 3.3

Ralph Garr was timed at 3.3 (unconfirmed 3.2)

Rick Manning was timed at 3.3 (ran a 9.8 100 yard dash in High School)

Miguel Dilone was timed at 3.3

Mickey Rivers was timed at 3.4

Willie Wilson was timed at 3.6 and 3.7

Ichiro was timed at 3.7 seconds

Reggie Jackson (in his early days) was sub 4.0 down the line. ( he stated 3.8)

Trouts fastest time is 3.53 which is still BLAZING!

I doubt the validity of that.

Trout runs it in the low 3.8s and virtually every article I've said said that's amongst the best they've ever seen.

Mantle running more than a full half second faster than that?

The only tool Trout doesn't have is a very good arm. Otherwise, he's as good as they get. He is a very good ballplayer.

Trout made it once is 3.53 but ya....Mantle did smoke that. fricking crazy huh!

ETA: Keep in mind Trout hits from the right side of the plate so Mantles 3.5 is more applicable when comparing apples to apples.

There's no way Mantle's 3.1 would be legit with today's technology sorry.

Trout will retire as one of the best to ever play, he'll have a better career than mantle. Sad he won't stay with the angels his whole career.

Is confirmed by MLB. They can time from video FWIW.

According to the numbers, at this point, he's Vada Pinson. Close to Frank Robinson as well. This is all by his numbers at his age.

With that said, that's a good comparison, Dan. Mickey Mantle is #3 in comparison.

Am I the only one that gets lost in Baseball Reference? I'll go looking for something and end up at some players in 1922 and how many HR's they've hit. All the while, I was just going check out some Astros minor league numbers.

There is no way anyone can know this. Trout is a STUD but way too many things can happen.

Reminds me of that commercial....

"Hey kid, it's your granddad. I'm in the middle of pitching 17 innings after a breakfast of chipped beef and SCOTCH."

That's a pretty good comp, too.

Pinson seems like an odd comp, but Trout likely compares well there due to both being crazy productive at young ages.

I've always compared Miguel Cabrera to Mantle because both were/are raging alcoholics who only seemed to get better as they drank harder.

It may be me, but Miggy looks a lot more svelte this year than even last year.

Maybe he's cut back on the tequila.
