I grew up watching Sanford and Son and loved it. I was watching an old episode of Sanford and Son this past weekend and it was the one where Julio first moved in next door. I laughed my arse off but that was some racist shite. They could never get away with that today.

Fred ranted about how Harlem was a paradise before Purto Ricans moved in with their cockroaches and rats. And when Fred first heard his new neighbor was Puerto Rican, he said there goes the neighborhood. Keep in mind, they live in Watts.

The messed up part was that Julio was sincerely trying to be a good neighbor.

Go back and watch All in the Family or The Jeffersons... They had something to say about everybody. All part of the times.

I always liked how they needed Smitty to translate for this honkey.

That's what made these shows funny. They new how to make fun of racism and laugh at it.

It was all parody. They were trying to raise the collective awareness about racism. (well maybe not Sanford and Son).

The 'honky' cop was the gas station attendant in "The Graduate."

I remember the second episode where Fred asks Lamont why there wasn't a pinball machine in a nice bar:

Lamont: Pop, this ain't no honkytonk.
Fred: I sure see a lot of honkeys in here.

I watched an episode last week for the first time in 30 years. Fred wanted a white dentist because he didn't think a black man could be legit.

Yeah, but it was tackling that from all angles. That would not happen today. Today the focus would purely be on white on black racism, if it would even be featured in comedy at all. We're much more uptight now.

I know one is when he says in traffic court to a white cop: "There's enough n's in here to make a Tarzan movie.

I met Redd Foxx IRL in Vegas ( late 80's) He was doing stand up with some other older comedians , the best stand up I ever seen. It was with my first wife on our honeymoon and of course our table was next too the stage. He would stop and mess with us during the show telling my then wife that if he had sex with her it would ruin her for any white man after the show he invited us for drinks with him and his girlfriend(Asian chick). He was really awesome ,said that he had too go back to work because the IRS had seized all of his assets.....Sanford and Son is my favorite TV show of all time
