How do mid season acquisitions count against the cap?

I asked this in another thread and it got looked over.

how do mid season additions to the roster work? they count against the cap this year, right? so what if the Pels made a play for a decent player at the trade deadline. say they have that $3 mil (they would have given to Oden) to play with at that time. how does that work?

I think you can sign replacement players for injuries, but only for the prorated veteran minimum. It doesn't really affect the cap, but it could affect the tax number. If they add up with the cap to push us over the tax, you could end up paying.

What Jester said. If you preserve the Room MLE, as you suggest is possible if they don't sign Oden, you have that as well.
