I have a Capital One Cash rewards card with 1% back. My question is does paying bills with this card count for 1%? I mean bills like directv, verizon, student loans, etc. Basically anything but the mortgage. Thanks for any help.

Yes, but some companies will add on a service charge if you pay by credit card. It will be a percentage and it will be higher than 1%.

you can do better than 1%, maybe not on bills, but on a lot of other categories

if you choose to go that route

Can you explain this? I am not sure what you mean, unless you mean getting a different card.

He means a lot if cards give more than 1 on dining, travel, and gas. 1 is baseline for any reward card

We don't really travel. I use penfed for the 5% gas. What other recommendations are there to save money on other stuff?

Just google a few. Many will give 2 on eating out. Get one with a large sign up bonus. Can't beat pen fed on the gas.

Amex blue for groceries is 6%, that's a big saver for our family

Citi forward gives me 5x points at restaurants and amazon.com

I also use penfed for gas

I have citi forward, while it does give 5points, that doesn't mean 5%.

The conversion rate at best makes it slightly over 2%. I stick with my other cards for ease of figuring out % returned and across the board same redemption.

What's the yearly fee on the Amex Blue? 6% on groceries on what does it give on everything else?
