Auction vs. Draft

Read the piece on Yahoo where they debated the merits of both and thought I'd bring the debate here.
Probably my favorite argument for an auction was "every player is available". It's really just a determination of what plan you have for your budget at the beginning of the draft.
Majority of the leagues on here are traditional drafts, just want to see if a discussion might change some old ways of thinking.

Auction is the best way to go. I only do one draft like this because most of the guys in my other leagues don't understand the concept yet.
Also, whatever plan you have get ready to throw it in the garbage because it never goes as you plan. Make sure to have a plan B,C,and D. I always go WR heavy and I got Drew Brees with my 3rd pick so I had QB, RB, WR and wasn't able to draft another top 2 WRs

I always thought it better to have 8 4th round picks than eight 1-8 round picks, would gladly let the premium price players go in favor of my tried and true lunch pail guys.

I don't know, I kind of disagree with that opinion.
like last year in my longest participating league, I was able to get Frank Gore and CJ Spiller/Fred Jackson with little competition in an auction format.
when I picked both of the Bills backs I caught a lot of shite. Just a lot of "Buffalo sucks" remarks that you might expect from a few fantards.
I knew I was getting a nice rotation of backs that played on teams who had underrated success running the ball. More so with Buffalo than San Fran obviously... a lot of people just weren't interested in Gore because of his age.

This will be my 3rd auction this year (1 in football and 1 in baseball). I think there's just more action in an auction, from watching people blow through their money and trying to figure out how you're allocating yours to watching your sleeper get bid up out of your price range.
My snake draft leagues I will just show up with a printed top 200 sheet and select my BAP and wait for my turn.

I got Gore for $22 or so last year. Definitely on the low end of the spectrum for RB1 and not anywhere near the 2nd round price someone paid for him in one of my draft leagues.
But at least in my auction league I had the opportunity to take him if I wanted to wait out all the people who were going to spend money on Rice, Foster and McCoy. My point is, nobody can snipe you.

I've only done a mock auction before. I felt that you need more of a game plan going into an auction than a draft.

4th rounders yeah
I was pushing 1st+8th for two 4s
but people look at the 8th and said "I don't want <8th round guy>"....give me 1+5 for two 4s.
this way, it's a get what you pay for....and not what you were "entitled to" because you randomly got the first pick in the draft

yeah, I'm with you on that.
and what you said about showing up to a snake draft with Top 200 sheet is so true, typically it is best player available.
but in an auction when random different players are nominated, it makes for more interesting results IMO. It felt like a few times last year some of the other guys would just get up to go grab a beer or something because they just weren't interested in that player.
like for example, if a bunch of marquee WR's had been auctioned off in a row and then all of sudden someone nominates Mike Williams from the Bucs. You can bet he wouldn't get that many bites.

You say that but I assume you're a numbers guy who works in spreadsheets. You just have to have a plan. It take a special kind of retard to leave $13 available at the end of the draft.
My starting lineup last year in TDFL after the auction was
QB Rodgers - $52 17th player picked
RB Peterson - $29 29th
RB FJax - $30 51st (got caught bidding up)
WR Nicks - $23 61st
WR Colston - $13 71st
FLX Gore - $22 66Th
TE Fred Davis - $4 62nd
And I was considered one of the conservative bidders.

have done all snake drafts until last year I got in an established auction league. Loved it and now I'm trying to get my main snake draft league to go towards and auction.
