Alhough the Hotel really wanted Danny.

Almost like his soul was taken back to that previous time (or trapped?) or something like that. It would explain why the bartender knew who he was when he was hallucinating that shite too.

I watched the last 20 minutes or so of this a couple weeks ago and had all but forgotten about the whole deal with the picture at the end.

Basically that too, though I think the hotel wanted them both.

I read someone saying that the hotel claimed his soul and everyone in the picture has been claimed as well.

Also read that he was the caretaker who killed his kids and the hotel brought him back.

I get the basics of what it means, but I want a definite answer dammit.

That's what I always assumed.

The Hotel wanted Danny because of his gift, The Shining. In order to get Danny, the Hotel manipulated Jack and used him as a tool to kill Danny and capture his soul.

Jack wanted to be a part of the hotel, but he had to do it's bidding first. It was a two part deal. Kill the boy, and you can join.

In the end, Jack couldn't do it, so he let Danny escape and died in the hotel. It is never said if he got to be a part of the hotel or not.

This is all from the book.

Movie took different liberties with the story, and that's why King hated it so much.

Meh, the movie was better than the book.

The only cool part about the book was learning about the history of the hotel and that's about it.

Liberties is a nice word to use in regards to how Badly Kubrick changed the movie from the Novel.

I enjoyed the film a lot, but the book is sooo much better.

I actually preferred the book for the one reason that in the book the HOtel was an actual living character.

It was ominous and a real danger. Unlike the movie.

Yeah, the book has always been one of my favorites. Looking forward to the sequel later this year.

Finished reading the book about 2 weeks ago. I found the book to scarier and I liked its ending better but, the movie is great on its own accord.

He was always the caretaker.

Jack was possessed by the Hotel.

no. The hotel was almost dormant until Danny showed up. His gift ignited the hotel and sent it into meth mode.

Yea, That was one of the biggest errors in the movie. You never really get the sense that Halloran is literally scared of the boy being in the hotel like you do in the book.

King spends a long time writing about Halloran and the boy together before Halloran leaves, and Halloran even warned Danny.

One of the best lines in the book was "When you see something, just remember, they're not really there. It's like a movie. Nothing here can hurt you. I don't think."

Also, the ending. In the book, it's not just Jack chasing them down. The Hotel fights back. Halloran has to do battle with the hotel just to get in the gate. And the hotel gets really pissed when Jack doesn't do what it wants.

I think I may be the only person on the planet who liked the mini-series better than Kubrick's movie.

Sure, there were certain scenes in Kubrick that are classic and unforgettable in their own right, but the story was much better in the tv mini-series (IMHO, of course).
