Question for the OB....

Convince me this is a bad idea. With the increasing amounts of ethanol fuel out there, what would be wrong with putting a 500 gallon tank at my camp and using off road fuel for the boat much like I do at my farm and guarantee myself no ethanol in the fuel? I burn about 30-60 gallons a week on average so I think I would burn through it before it got water in the gas. Any thoughts pro or con?

My dad and I have talked about the same thing, but not quite that size. The convenience would be worth it to me, but you'd be paying a delivery price as well, so idk.

Cons would be people stealing your gas.

Also, I thought farm fuel was meant for agriculture, not just off road.

Where is your camp? None of the marinas around me have ethanol in the fuel.

Do they even make an "off road" gasoline? I thought that it was just diesel. And then the ethanol thing wouldn't even come in to play.

I have a farm. However my bigger thing even if I paid normal price would be lack of ethanol and Gas at the camp.

What type of storage would be required for a delivery truck to bring that in? I would think their requirements would be more strict than you bringing in gas yourself. That might push up install cost, what about high water, any chance of it floating off?

I didn't even know they made off road gasoline, I thought it was just off road diesel.

The convenience of being able to just fill up at the camp would be awesome on a long weekend

eta: I do enjoy going to the marina though

They do make an agricultural Gas which I believe is less than regular gas. Not 100% sure on that though I use lots of diesel on the farm but not enough gas to warrant it's own tank.

Is it dyed like diesel? You know, so people that aren't in ag can be busted for using it?

There must not be too much of a demand for it, because in all the farm towns I go through, I've never seen off road gasoline, just diesel fuel

Should be able to save the road taxes...

Off road fuel is not just for farming. Construction companies use it and yes you can get non taxed gasoline. You're not going to save much but definitely cheaper than most marinas. You will most likely have to pass inspection before a fuel company will fill the tank. This means a double walled tank as well as some sort of containment. You do not want to be the guy that owns a tank that is leaking into the bayou.

It's not just for ag purposes only. Any off road machinery can use it such as dirt work equipment, job site forklifts, etc.

As far as I know it isn't dyed.

We used to burn a shitload of gas at the farm and to the best of my knowledge we were getting off road gas and it was not dyed.

Shouldn't matter anyway if he's only burning it in the boat. It's a good idea IMO until it goes under water and you have to buy all new gas and a new $800 transfer pump and have to fight people off from stealing it and the tank corrodes to nothing from the salt air and it gets water in it from condensation and all the gas goes bad from sitting too long

Otherwise it's a good idea

unless you leave gas in your boat for weeks without running it, ethanol is not a problem

I already have the fuel tank not really worried about that. Just called my delivery people to inquire... No real thing as "farm gas" like farm Diesel. I have always seen farm tanks with gas in them, however it must be just for ease of filling up equipment even though the tanks say offroad use only.

Just an FYI I could get it delivered to my tank in Venice at 3.34/gallon no extra fees. I am strongly considering it. I am going to do some more research and would be interested in anyone elses input on it before going down that road if someone has already done it.

On a private tank, False.

Transfer pump, explosion proof wiring, and a placard on the side of the tank are all you need for the truck to fill it.
