Shoes (boots?) to wear hiking

Anyone who has been hiking, what do you wear? I want something with support, but cannot think of lugging around some clunky high-top boots.

ETA: What do the OT hikers think of hiking with trail runners?

Trail runners. I'm a fan of La Sportiva.

Something similar to this..

I have actual boots too but don't see the need for them in most cases.

Merrell. Just went to rockies mountains last week and have not hiked a trail in years. Bought some merrell in Colorado and went on a 9 mile hike immediately after. After 5 hours, no blisters. Highly recommend them and I am no means an outdoorsman.

Depends on what kind of hiking you ate doing? Day hiking with just a daypack on? Backpacking carrying a heavy pack?

My day hikers are Merrells and I love them. They are not clunky high top boots either

Tenn my Merrells looks very similar to those. They are the waterproof kind.

Depends on the kind of hiking you're doing. If you're just walking on a flat trail with a daypack, trail runners should be perfectly fine.

If the trail is rocky and/or muddy, you will appreciate the ankle support of lightweight waterproof boots.

If you are doing a multiday backpacking trip you already have a well-worn pair of heavy-duty boots you trust. I bought mine in 2005 and plan to bronze them when they're finally done.

Both (if carrying a child carrier is considered a "heavy" pack?)

I would say so. If you are carrying a heavy pack you need more support on your feet. So the high top boots you don't like are gonna be more what you want.

Get them in black and wear them to church also.

You don't need high top boots unless you are into alpine mountaineering.

Waterproof shoes hold water a lot longer than lightweight breathable runners if they get wet inside.

These are very popular. I have many miles of rough rocky terrain on mine.
