I was wondering if there is anyone who could give some insight as to how recruiting was done back in the 50's 60's etc.. Did they have camps like they do today or any sort of combines. I can't imagine they had any film like today.

LSU, with unlimited scholarships, would sign almost every D-1 player just so other teams wouldn't have them. LSU knew that a lot of those players would never play major roles on the team.

When I was at LSU in the eighties, they announced the signees on WBRZ and I wrote them down so I could call my dad in N. LA tell him who we got. Tiger Rag magazine did some recruiting profiles but it was nothing like it is now.

And as far as recruiting by the colleges goes, I saw it change. My senior year, we had one of the most highly sought after players in the country. He got a lot of letters but had no fact to face contact with coaches until he took his on campus visits. The following year, there was another highly recruited player, and coaches were showing up at the school on a daily basis. The process changed that fast. This was early eighties.

Thank you. I've always wondered when the day was.

Now if someone could clarify the gap, please.

The thing I remember about the early 70s is that the best players got very cool new sports cars and great jobs. Nobody talked about how these materialized, but everyone knew.

Bear Bryant came to LSU and took John David Crow out of his Dorm room and brought him to A&M, where he would win the Heisman.
I remember: Archie Manning, while playing for the Saints, visiting schools recruiting for Ole Miss in NOLA, Reggie Dupard getting a nice 280zx from SMU, and listening to Max Emfinger on Hap Glaudi and later Buddy D's show on WWL to get the scoop. Also remember Lee Brecheen having a get together at Hooters and being asked to say a few words about Clarence LeBlanc, whom I had coached. Things are so different now.

I thought Bama was the main one that gave unlimited scholarships. Bear would give OT swimming scholarships and shite. That's why if you play multiple sports and you're on scholarship it counts against football now.

They had to pick up recruits in wagons and after the horse got tired they told the recruits to saddle up. If the made it to campus, they were signed. Sad to say, many did not.

Signing Day was the First Saturday in December. I think it was called the SEC Letter of Intent and later on National Signing Day you signed again. The SEC Letter was binding in the SEC, ACC, and most Independents. It was not binding in the old Southwest Conference. You did not know much in the old days and only what you heard on the Radio. I remember the Advocate and TP on the Sunday after the Saturday was a big Sports Page. Also after National Signing Day. I remember when they had Blue Chip, Red Chip, and Others List. At one time most of the good players went out of state. I think that stopped when Stovall became the Head Coach. At that time LSU had Wrestling and some of the players signed came through the Wrestling Program. LSU had a Freshman Football Team because Freshman could not play. You had to sign enough players to support the Freshman Team plus the Varsity Team. Only if you were great did you play as Sophmore. Most players did not play until they were Juniors. I think Recruiting took off when the National Blue Chip Magazine came out and Max Emfinger and those guys started going on Radio shows. Hap Glaudi was big on Recruiting and he usually had all the information you needed on WWL Radio.

What I was interested in knowing was how LSU actually scouted talent back then. Was it just going to the players schools for games and practices. Would LSU host a bunch of kids in Louisiana for summer camps?

I think it was mostly word of mouth from HS coaches. I know my coach would make a film compilation of his best players and send them to likely colleges (I was never on the film )

I had a couple teammates that Ole Miss wanted. Archie Manning came to speak to them on Ole Miss' behalf.

It's against the rules now. Someone needs to report it, if they see it.
I agree, eff Ingram.
