I just picked up Soccernomics from the bookstore, but I'd like to know more about tactics at the club/international level. Anyone know of any good books or websites that I can check out?

Inverting the Pyramid
Brilliant Orange (to a lesser extent)
Futebol: The Brazilian Way of Life (culture of the game more than anything)

Haven't read Rafa's biography, but I've heard that he discusses tactics a lot in it

Good thread. I've been meaning to ask the same question. About to finish Soccernomics and I need a new read.

My recommendations:

Brilliant Orange
Fever Pitch
The World is a Ball
Futebol: The brazilian Way of Life
Inverting the Pyramid
Dynamo
Soccernomics

On my list are:

Sami Hyypia, Carragher, Bellamy, Rafa, King Kenny and Pep's autobiographies
Out of His Skin (John Barnes and racism)
43 Years With the Same Bird
An Epic Swindle: 44 Months with a Pair of Cowboys
Bob Paisley: Manager of the Millenium
The Italian Job
Tor! The Story of German Football

I have a bunch more written down in my room. I can post them all if anyone is seriously interested.

Inverting the Pyramid is definitely the first thing that I think of when it comes to tactics. It's the only one I can think of that's specifically about tactics.

It starts with England, and then covers the development of tactics in various countries/regions. It's not comprehensive - the end seemed a bit rushed to me, and there's nothing about the evolution of the Spanish game/tactics, for example.

It's good though, there's a surprising amount about Eastern Europe (well it's maybe not surprising since Wilson covers Eastern Europe - he wrote a book specifically about that LINK )

Really want this one, but they don't carry it at Barnes and Noble. I hate ordering shite online.

These books are not really on tactics but are good soccer books.

Cantona The Rebel Who Would Be King
by Philippe Auclair

Soccer Men
by Simon Kuper(Coauthor of Soccernomics)

and for all you Arsenal fans
Arsene Wenger The Biography

I saw this at Books A Million today when I bought Soccernomics. Almost picked that up as well.

Soccer Men

It's basically profiles and interviews of past and present legends of the game. It delves into how said players got started as kids amongst other things. Most of the Brazilians and Cantona have really interesting pieces.

I've tried a handful of times, but it's largely a waste of time unless crazy or wm happen to be reading.

Certain things like pressing, possession and spacing are largely misunderstood on this board.

Good thread, good suggestions, and I second the more tactics talk point. I'm not an expert by any means, but I enjoy discussions on tactics.

I'd get involved but I don't watch much of the EPL. I'll gladly talk tactics about games we all see. U.S. games, Bundesliga, CL games

Yea talking tactics is very enjoyable. It's just hard to find the right company sometimes to do so.

I'm going to try my damnedest to submerge myself in the Bundesliga this season.

I love the Prem, but there are just too many bandwagon fans clogging the forums with hypocritical and downright ignorant commentary. It's almost a burden at this point to wade through page after page of incoherent babble to find a speck of logic.

You and Tweezy just seem so blissfully content, largely because you don't have to deal with the type of people I'm describing.

As for general soccer books, I'm heading to Auburn's library tomorrow...found these newer ones in a search, looked interesting. Anyone read any of these?

Distant Corners: American soccer's history of missed opportunities and lost causes
Spartak Moscow: a history of the people's team in the workers' state
African Soccerscapes: How a Continent Changed the World's Game
The Leaguers: the making of professional football in England

A big part is that we can watch games with an open mind because there's not a large fanbase for teams here that are annoying. So if Freiburg is playing Schalke, I'm not thinking man I fricking hate Freiburg fans so I hope they get raped.

Dortmund fans are pretty fricking annoying if you spend any time on reddit though. They like to pretend they have a small club that's trying to take down the big bad Bayern when they're top-10 in revenue in Europe and they have a fricking 80,000 seat stadium.
