my HBO problem

I have U-Verse, but only for internet.
For TV, I have a Roku box and I would like to watch HBO on it.
But apparently, I have to have a cable or satellite TV subscription in order to add HBO as a premium channel and access it via the Roku box, online, or however. A la carte subscriptions to HBO appear to be disallowed.
Is there any (legit) way around this?
