I'm about 5 episodes in but haven't really been that interested. Is this something I should keep going or are those first few episodes a good indicator of the series?

turn it off then. This board has been filled with praise for it as best series ever, with good reason.

It grabbed me in the first two scenes. I had never seen or heard anything like it on TV before. I was fascinated and enthralled from there on out.

it just goes so far beyond this

its about our identity as a culture and a nation. Its about the meaning of the American city.

This show hit me like a ton of bricks and rocked my world view.

I've never watched a single crime drama or cop show and I don't really categorize The Wire as such. It's got way more going on for it.

Yeah, crime drama is definitely a reductionist view. It's infinitely more nuanced than that and generally accepted to be one of the 5 greatest television narratives we've had the privilege of seeing. There's a reason for that. Be patient, familiarize yourself with the style/feel of the show, and I almost guarantee you'll be hooked.

IMO, if episode 12, “Cleaning Up," doesn't hook you (which assumes you haven't already been hooked) I'm not sure that I would trust your judgment about TV

The show makes white people feel like they "understand" black culture and what it's like living in the "hood." No more no less.

Not sure why you think the impact on black people would be any less.

Since it was made by people that were actual reporters, cops, and criminals in Baltimore (the very same characters they are portraying), it could not be more realistic. It is basically a documentary. The photography is even done in a striped down hyper-realistic documentary style.

Just finished it. I'm into the series now. Pretty good stuff. Just took awhile to take off.

Next piece of advice: Don't assume season two picks right up from season one's end...each season focuses on a different aspect of Baltimore. Season one was the drug trade, two is the docks, three is politics, four is the school system, and five is print media. But even though they all have different focuses, some underlying plots continue throughout the run of the show.

So that's just an FYI before you continue since season two rubs some people the wrong way because the Barksdale organization isn't the main focus.

I'm in the minority on this board, but I feel The Wire is good, not great. It definitely has a slow pace, but the character development is superb. Still, the transition scenes are more sleep inducing than Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man, which is the only film I've ever fallen asleep in.

Some people say give a show an entire season, but I think that's entirely too long.

I always tell people watch the first minute of Breaking Bad. If it grips you (which it should), keep watching. If not, the show isn't for you.

No offense, but you are flat out wrong.

There are a lot of shows that I absolutely love that took me more than 1 episode, let alone 1 minute to enjoy.

Hell it took me more than a season to start really enjoying Fringe.

This thread again?

If you aren't into it from the word "snot", turn it off.

I still have The Shield ahead of The Wire. I have BB, Sopranos, The Wire, The Shield and Hill Street Blues (Old School) as the 5 best dramas I've watched. But, those shows are literally in their own league against the competition. I like Mad Men, but I don't necessarily consider it in the same league as those 5 - but BB and MM have a little more time to make an impression.

Personally I try to give a show, especially one that is one of those "slow build" deals a full season before I make a call on whether to continue to watch.
