He tweeted a picture today of him signing with Cardinals but I can't find anything about how much.

His slot was around 400K

I've always heard that the average minor league yearly salary was around 30k.

I'm pretty ignorant to how signing works in the MLB so what exactly does "his slot was around 400k" mean?

Is that 30k average incorrect?

The 400k would be signing bonus. The actual salary is pretty meager

It is how much someone drafted in his position is expected to sign for on average. However, some go much higher than their slot and some go much lower.

He won't sign anywhere close to 400K. They will low ball it because he is a senior. With the new rules on draft picks they can take a senior higher in the draft and pay him a lesser signing bonus to have more money to spend on other picks.

Which really isn't bad for a 22 year old. I wouldn't mind pplaying baseball for a few years for 40k a year, lol.
But yeah the guys who get paid really good are the ones drafted near the top and the ones who actually break into the big leagues.

It actually isn't an average any more. Each pick is assigned a specific amount and thats how each team's total bonus pool is determined.

Not sure where all these estimates that he would make 45k are coming from. He will get his signing bonus but assuming he goes to A ball or High A he only stands to make between 900 and 1300 a month and thats only for the season. Not year round. Salary is closer to 4-6k a year. This is true for just about everyone until you get on a Major League 40 man roster or be a career triple A guy where you can make in the 50-60k range. Money is crap until then though

absolutely. i know 2 families with their kids in minor league A ball and both say they have to send them money so they can make ends meet without having to spend their signing money. They were 5th and 6th round picks.

Good lord, some of you just don't know. With the new CBA kids can only sign for slotted value or a little over or wayyyy under. Being a Senior, Katz will prolly sign for much less than slot and make $1,100 a month like every other Single A player.
Yes, Single A and less make $1,100 a month. AA = a small promotion to $1,500 a month.

The "slot" allotment of money is based on the point at which he was actually drafted. (Round, pick). That number is what is generally publicly reported as "what he got", in reference to college baseball players after they get drafted. Unless the player actually tells publicly what his signed deal is, it usually is far from the number first reported. The MLB clubs immediately low-ball from the slot number. The process is actually pretty brutal unless you are one of the stars, like Gausman was last year.

You won't make close to 45 a year in the minors they get their money off signing bonus the money they make during the season is a set amount a month based on what level you are at in the minors
