So we all know losing Butler for the season is going to be a huge setback. I know a lot of people were somewhat disappointed by not drafting Jones in the 1st. Some were not high on him in the first place and were pumped about the Vaccaro pick. Some, like myself, were optimistic but concerned about the risk the organization was taking by not drafting an impact player in the position of highest need in the switch to a 3-4.

We all know hindsight is 20-20, but has your opinion on the pick of KV over JJ changed with this injury?

Cant look at it that way, but i would be lying that the aggravation on draft day was tempered by the thought of having Butler...

I will say the only positive thing about Butler is he already has experience in the Ryan system, so him coming back the following year won't be as much of a grind to catch up with those still here from the previous year.

The butler injury proves my point

3 unproven guys. If one goes down we're screwed

And that's before accounting for the fact that pass rushers are a much rarer commodity

No Jarvis Jones is still an out of shape lazy frick who doesn't like to practice etc that the coaches weren't turned off by completely.

I guess the Steelers, who have brought up the most perennial AFC pro bowl linebackers and have one of the best linebacker coaches in the NFL, are idiots when it comes to evaluating talent at that position. Thanks Chad.

Of course not. But the Saints haven't had a good linebacker corps since Haslett left. The best that I have come to expect from the Saints at linebacker has been mediocre. You can't have mediocre linebackers in a 3-4.

I don't think that either Jones or Vaccaro will "bust". I think your upside from Jones is he has higher star potential than Vaccaro. I think Vaccaro was a good choice if Jones was off the table, but he was not. Just my opinion.

Have a much different situation. They have a good D in place. Our D blows and taking a huge risk on someone with character issues was valued less than KV's abilities. May be the wrong choice, time will tell, but we needed a sure fire starter.

What grade would you give their 1st round selections since joining Saints?

Now that is a logical statement that I can understand completely. The only thing that compelled me in favor of Jones is the sheer need at OLB and the no clear definition of a true starter at the pass-rushing 3-4 OLB position.

The existence of Shanle on our roster for as long as he was there is proof that we have a lack of talent at OLB. The more you have at one given position creates a higher probability of success after training camp.

I still like the Vaccaro pick because I've come to grips with it more.

Just means Galette, Wilson, Will Smith, Chase Thomas. and Rufus Johnson need to step the hell up.

I sure hope so. The only "good" thing about the Butler injury is that the entire organization knows in June that he won't be available and have time to appoint/coach up the next guy/guys up.
