"RANGERS really ARE Scotland’s most successful football club, ad watchdogs have ruled.

The Ibrox outfit sparked a string of complaints when they made the boast in commercials three months ago.

Critics claimed the slogan was misleading because oldco Gers — who won 114 trophies — went into liquidation last year. But a leaked decision by the Advertising Standards Authority said consumers would realise the claim “related to the club rather than to its owner and operator”.

It added: “We therefore concluded that it was not misleading for this ad to make reference to RFC’s history.”

The commercials trumpeting the Light Blues as “Scotland’s most successful club” appeared on radio and in the Press ahead of their home match with Annan Athletic in March.

Just weeks later, the ASA launched a probe after receiving 78 complaints from rival fans.

But it prompted an angry response from Rangers who branded the investigation “ridiculous”.

They later handed over a letter from the European Club Association recognising their history.

And they provided evidence from Lord Nimmo Smith’s independent probe into player payments that said a club could “continue in existence” even if they shifted to “another owner”.

Last night a Rangers spokesman said: “The club was never in any doubt that this would be the outcome.

“It was a ridiculous claim and we knew the ASA would take the same view as the football authorities and Lord Nimmo Smith.”

The ASA declined to comment on the leaked ruling, but did not dispute its accuracy.
