New motherboard and processor. Old HDD

So I bought a ASrock Z87 Pro 4 MB and a new i5-4670k processor. So here's the problem. I'm using my old hard drive and I installed windows with an OEM 64 bit windows vista home premium. Now I know your really only to allowed to install those once but I heard you can get a new key if you call the people an get lucky. When I start my machine with all the new shite in it the bios screen comes up and it reads everything fine but when I put the windows disk in it takes me to the safe mode/start windows normally screen and it won't launch/read the disk?
So should I just say frick it and get a new HDD and operating system or is there a way around this.

are you trying to keep your old files that are on the hdd or are you ok with doing a clean install?
oh and when you call the activation number for M$, call the automated number (dont talk to a person) and use the keypad to enter the installation ID. when asked how many computers the software has been installed on, say 1. you wont have any problems.

I don't care about the old files. I'm down to wipe it clean. But I've already put all the new shite into my computer. Is it possible to clear it all off still?

put the OS disk in your optical drive, and boot the computer up and enter the BIOS.
make sure the first boot priority is the optical drive you have the OS disk in and save those settings.
reboot your computer and press space bar repeatedly (once a second should do, no need to mash it like a monkey). that will force the computer to load from the optical drive.
install a new copy of windows on the hdd. your old copy of windows will be moved to a windows.old folder.
after windows is installed, navigate to the windows.old folder and find your old user folder. all your documents, movies, nudes of the gf etc will be there and you can move them over to the new user folder in the new OS install. programs wont move, just docs.

In my experience it's best to store those online in say...a fellow TD members email or something? It's best just in case something messes up during the install.

All you should need to do is install the new drivers for the new MB. It should work fine after that....mine did anyway.

All it gives me is Microsoft windows vista and under tools it says windows memory diagnostic

do you hear the DVD spinning? or is it like the computer has bypassed the optical drive and gone straight to the HDD

this is the best advice. if you splurged on the new 1150s you can probably afford $100 for SSD for the OS and photoshop etc. you really see a difference in performance from them.
however, right now we need to figure out why your optical drive is not showing up as a bootable device. check your cables. go into the bios and go through the boot menu, you can change devices and order.
