So lets say your under 10 son is really good at soccer. He is fast, can dribble, can shoot with either foot, has a great work ethic and wants to grind his opponents into the dust. What type of training do you get him and how often? What skills to emphasize? Does he need to be on a travel team at the highest available level or is private training the way to go?

Emphasis needs to be on 1st touch (i.e. making it count), vision (dribbling at speed with head up), passing (driven crosses, learning to pass w/ both inside and outside of both feet), and striking the ball (both with the instep, laces, and outside of the foot).

Needs to be on a team, but work on those things on his own (or with a trainer).

IMHO

What's his name, it's never too early for this board to hype up and young American that can dribble and chew gum at the same time as the next Pele. (Danny Mwanga, Juan Agudelo etc...)

I developed more in a week of soccer camp than I did the rest of the year. I suggest finding a good camp and getting a friend or two to go with him.

Man, you could've at least picked guys who were busts...that's lazy.

Considering the hype they got from this board they are busts. Of course that's not their fault, but I know the board will be just as hot and heavy for the next guy.

One isn't even a US citizen yet, and the other has been featured off and on despite a tough club situation. Both are still very young.

They aren't even close to being busts yet.

Make sure wherever he plays it's in an environment that he can develop a love of playing and not a grind that will burn him out.

BR, NO, Gonzales, Mandeville, Laffy, Shreveport Houma and other places have successful club programs. Check out LaprepSoccer.net also

And check into ODP (Olympic Developmental Program - but don't let the name scare you)

Get him to a few camps this summer. Are you in the New Orleans area? Call Hubie at Jesuit; Alan DeRitter is another name.

Coach Kenny Farrell still doing camps?

Good stuff. My kid's 9 and will play u12 club this coming season. Play up if possible, as they get a head start. As long as your kid can handle it and contribute to the team, do it. We work on first touches and ball control. He can also watch add much tv as he wants as long as he's working on footwork and ball handling in the process.

my 3 year old is pretty insane though. He'll end up a lot better than the 9 year old. My 5 yr old is good but doesn't really give a shite.

For the young ones we usually play games like monster and such. Whatever gets their feet on the ball and laughing. Teaching them to use both feet while really young is huge.

Did any of your Great-Granparents come from Italy? Any other way to get a European passport?
