I'm not one to go to many live sporting events (haven't been to an LSU event in many years) but since I live in Southeast Birmingham, I just couldn't pass up Sundays Chamionship game.

1) Lots of purple and gold. I'd say a solid 2 to 1 LSU fans to VU fans. No surprise there.

2) A lot of eye candy. I was impressed.

3) I didn't think to bring a flask.

4) The sidearmed kid for Vandy absolutely had LSU's number. Was it 5 innings he shut down LSU?

5) The ump was fair. Missed calls on both sides, but not a lot from where I was sitting. I think the only missed call in the field may have gone our way on a second base tag.

6) Cotton ran a full throttle sprint from the bullpen. Like the kid couldn't wait to get to the mound. Great job closing.

7) The place went absolutely ape-shite when the CF caught the ball over his head at the wall.

8) Even though we led most of the game, it felt like VU had the momentum. It was a very tense game to watch.

9) Our pitchers kept pitching themselves into trouble. 4 pitch walks and more hit by pitches than I've seen in a long time. Particularly with 2 outs.

10) Big time players make big time plays at the most crucial times. And that's what separated VU from LSU.

And last....

11) Ran into 2 groups of VU fans leaving, all very upset at the calls, and thought the ump gave the game to LSU. One fat cow was really pissed, while her little 6 year old-ish daughter tried to reason with her and tell her that it was just a close game. I just laughed at her and walked off. You expect dick fans from Bama or Florida or Ole Miss. But Vandy? Really? Way to teach your impressionable daughter how to be a shite fan.

Anyway. 'grats to the kids. They played their asses off.

They missed calls both ways all game. Not the kind of ump(s) you want for a championship game, but both teams had to deal with the shady calls left and right. How many times did we think we walked and got called strike 3 on?

FIFY

"Big time players, make big time plays, in big time games."

I think that was Dwayne Bowe that said that

I actually thought it was a little closer to even in fan representation. plat to LF was nearly entirely P&G. While plate to RF had a pretty strong Vandy flavor. All doing that goofy one handed gator chomp thing.

I thought the home plate ump was terrible. His strike zone changed throughout the game and he was calling strikes for Vandy's submariner that weren't being called for LSU. It was as if he had no idea where the ball was ending up and was just guessing at balls and strikes for the submariner.

LSU did, however, get two very favorable calls early in the game - the throw down to second base by Ross and tag by Yocom on the Vandy steal attempt was a missed call, he was safe. Also, the call at first base early in the game was also missed in favor of LSU. I forget whether it was a nubber or a bunt but the Vandy player clearly beat the throw to first.

Completely agree. LSU got a good bit of help in the field with bad calls, but the home plate up was destroying us, especially our righties with that low and outside strike zone. If you were batting right handed for LSU, and the ball was within 2 feet of the plate outside, and reached the catcher in less than 3 hops, you'd better swing because it's gonna be called a strike.

Yep. I think Raph just started swinging at anything close, because he knew he wasn't going to get any calls.

Speaking of balls being one-hopped to the catcher, LSU had a few themselves. The worst hit the ground just past halfway to home plate. I can't remember whio was pitching at the time. Fury maybe?

I think the close call at first was LSU doing a diving tag to get the out.

Since this has morphed into a thread bout the poor quality of the umps, I presume that they were SEC umps? That says it all as far as I am concerned. As to the regionals/Supers, the NCAA assigns umps from all over the country to the 16 hosts sites, so presumably we won't get any SEC quality umps here. A good thing.

There were several hundred real Vandy fans.I was there all week and prior to saturday, there were probably 50-75 Vandy fans at their games. More came down for the weekend obviously. The majority of the crowd cheering for Vandy on Sunday were fans of State/Alabama/Auburn who were cheering against LSU. LSU fans were everywhere in Birmingham all week and the numbers grew every day. Everywhere we went we got comments about "how many LSU fans" are here.

Yeah, two calls on the bases went LSU's way. However, when Vandy's closer was in, he got absolutely (Byrd) every ball/strike called. It was sickeningly obvious.

Replays on TV showed inconsistencies in the strike zone. Once McMuffin had a pitch under his armpit called a strike. One example but there were many.
