Yesterday was the 1st Vandy game I've seen all year. Anyone else catch what Corbin did with Tyler Beede? Apparantly he started him as DH, down in the order (8th).

When that spot in the order came up he then had the flexibility to either pinch hit a good bunter (if a bunt situation), a power hitter off the bench (if nobody on base), play a lefty/righty matchup, etc.

In this case I think he just pinch but his normal DH who ended up roping a double, but I thought it was a pretty cool, albeit small, stratgical decision that could give them a slight edge.

I saw that, and I was told it wasn't the first time Vandy did it.

He has always done this. Agreed, it's a cool little coaching tactic. He's a great coach and pretty respectable guy all around. He always has great pitching but his team has a great approach at the plate and I envy their aggressiveness and skills on the bases.

Can't argue with the strategy. The only downfall is that if you use your bunter in the 2nd inning and then PH with the regular DH guy in the 5th or whenever it falls, then you've eliminated a player early in the game. All in all, pretty sound strategy.

I don't quite understand the DH hitter and pinch hit strategy. Are you saying one can only hit once in the lineup? What advantage does having a pitcher in the line up do? I know Kentucky has one of their best hitters as a pitcher.

You essentially get to adjust your DH between the players that are good at certain things in your first AB.

So basically on the lineup card is listed as the DH/pitcher but given the situation they can adjust batters?

Yeah. Except you can list the pitcher who you know will not hit. If you listed say, Chinea, in the spot but you wanted a bunter and subbed someone else in, Chinea would not be able to play the rest of the game. Listing the pitcher allows you to avoid this problem.

The Aggies use Daniel Mengden at DH a lot. He is also a good enough pitcher to shut our hitters down for one game anyway
