Some guy just called in the radio and said an oversized load semi truck struck the bridge trying to fit which caused it to collapse.

I might have an idea what the cargo was.

Had a little stint doing freight brokerage the past few months and I did some loads out of Portland area hauling huge tanks up to a couple destinations in BC using that route. They were massive oversized loads but not terribly heavy. Hope none of my former carriers were involved.

It was a truck from Alberta that did it. He was hauling drilling equipment. At the bottom of this article it gives more detail LINK
I just took this road about an hour ago. At 1am with no traffic it took me about 10 minutes to do the detour. The detour goes through the middle of downtown of the city there and you have to go through about 20 lights. I had a friend who went through during the day and it took him 2 hours. It's going to be a nightmare. About 71,000 cars use that bridge every day.

The scariest bridge section to me is I-10 bridge section that is the last rise you go over before you can either go straight to downtown New Orleans or turn right onto the Baton Rouge/N.O. airport exit headed westbound. I was on my way to my brother's house west of the airport on a Friday evening about 6 PM. Just as I started up the rise of the bridge I hit a traffic jam and it took about 15 to 20 minutes of stop n go traffic to get over the bridge going a few feet at a time and then stopping. The whole time you could literally feel the bridge/overpass shaking and vibrating. The Minnesota bridge collapse crossed my mind at the time and all I wanted to do was get off that bridge asap. You are in for a LONG LONG fall into an industrial river canal area with hundreds of other cars if that bridge ever fails.

Structures are supposed to be flexible

If a bridge was completely rigid with a lot of moving loads on it, that would be more concerning

I understand that but it's still unnerving especially if you've seen too many of the Final Destination movies.
