anybody got any idea what we are willing to spend and how much over the cap we'll go in this year of building? much talk on here about not making certain moves cause it will put us over the cap. i mean, this is the nba and not the nfl.

We aren't allowed to go over the cap except in extending our own players. That would require throwing major bucks at Aminu/Henry.

We could go over the cap using the mid level exception or bi annual exception, though I doubt there are any players worth a crap who would sign for that since we aren't a contender like the Heat or Clip Show.

Not this year.

So being under the cap does not necessarily mean a team has room to sign free agents. For example, assume the cap is $58 million, and a team has $51.5 million committed to salaries. They also have a Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception for $5 million and a trade exception for $5.5 million. Even though their salaries put them $6.5 million under the cap, their exceptions also count toward their team salary, increasing their total to $62 million, or $4 million over the cap. So the team actually has no cap room to sign free agents, and instead must use its exceptions to sign players. Teams have the option to renounce their exceptions in order to reclaim their cap room.
A rule of thumb is that a team may have either exceptions or cap room, but it can't have both at the same time.

They will have the room exception, min salary exceptions, rookie exceptions, and use trades to go over the cap, just like last year.
They used cap space to bring in Andersona and Miller. This allowed Miller's salary to be aggregated immediately, and brought in Lopez and Warrick, which put them over the cap.

Right, but I assume the OP was really referring to the tax threshold. Most teams don't care about going over the cap other than how it impacts their ability to make moves. It's practically impossible to hit the tax threshold in a season where you start out under the cap.

I was just talking about the moves being possible to get above the cap since that was questioned. I agree that 'cap' casually means many things.
